Palermo-Shopping, Eating and Sightseeing

Not sure what to do, Just walk around and do some shopping and have a leisurely lunch or is the sightseeing worthwhile? If so, should we take a ship tour or rent a taxi or what? What restaurants with a nice view would you suggest? What specialty items do people buy? Any of your experiences would be helpful.

We landed in Palermo on Christmas Day, so not a lot was open. Still, we took a ship's tour through the city and to nearby Monreale which was very interesting. Pix and commentary are at:
