Ceegeefl Posted March 27, 2023 #1 Share Posted March 27, 2023 We are considering using Luggage Forward for 1 of our suitcases. We have a pre trip extension in Oslo, taking the train to Bergen. Would it be better to have our luggage shipped to the hotel in Oslo or the ship in Bergen? Trying to weigh the pros and cons of both. Has anyone used a luggage shipping service that they preferred other than Luggage Forward? Thanks!

If you use them, send the luggage to the ship. There is no reason to take it on the train with you if you don't need to. It's expensive but they know what they are doing!
dd57 Posted March 27, 2023 #3 Share Posted March 27, 2023 I have used Luggage Forward when we were doing independent travel before a cruise. And it is nice to not have to wrestle a big bag around. But just being devil's advocate here, since you are on a Viking pre-cruise extension, if you don't use LF and instead check the bag, the only times you have to touch the bag are: Taking it to the ticket counter to check it in at your home airport Claiming it at the Oslo airport and handing it over to the Viking reps Placing it outside your Oslo hotel room the morning of the train trip (with your Viking luggage tag with your cabin number on it) Unpacking it on board Viking will handle the bag from the Oslo airport to your hotel room, and from your hotel room all the way to your cabin on board the ship. Now LF picks up at your house and it appears in your cabin, so there is a lot less handling. But you can check a bag with things in it, such as your favorite shampoo, that you can't put in a bag sent via LF.
dd57 Posted March 27, 2023 #4 Share Posted March 27, 2023 (edited) Well, I think it is the bell hops that move the bags around inside the hotel, but you still don't have to drag it around. Viking coordinates with the hotel. At least on the 4 pre/post extensions we have done, including Bergen/Oslo. claranda Posted March 27, 2023 #6 Share Posted March 27, 2023 We’re using the Norwegian company Porterservice - https://www.porterservice.no They’re picking up our bags in the early hours from our hotel reception in Oslo and delivering them to our hotel in Bergen, who’ll store them until we check in two days later. They gave us an on-line quote per bag and will send us an invoice to pay the day before they pick up. They say they provide the service for people doing Norway in a Nutshell; we’re doing the trip independently, no problem. I don’t know, however, if they will deliver to the ship…. claranda Posted March 27, 2023 #7 Share Posted March 27, 2023 They charge NOK 400 per bag, by the way.
claranda Posted March 28, 2023 #8 Share Posted March 28, 2023 Sorry to dominate this thread, but apparently Porterservice does deliver to cruise ships in Bergen; just needs the passenger name/reservation number. They also pick up from the ship but you have to be dockside early to hand over the bags.
