We are booked on the Ascent in May of 2024.  One of our stops is Santa Margherita.  I was thinking of maybe doing a private wine tour.  Or another type of private tour.  Would love your suggestions.  What have you all done while in this port?    Would Appreciate any HELP.  Thanks so much!

Lucky you.  A delightful port of call with the added bonus of Portofino which can be reached on foot, by taxi or bus, or the wonderful short ferry ride. There have been a number of previous threads about Santa Margherita and Portofino as these ports have become more popular. The two are often linked as there is such a short distance between them and both are attractive and easily explored without a tour. They are also mentioned in threads relating to la Spezia.

It is easy to pull up all the previous threads, but I suggest you search for both SM and P (and maybe also la Spezia)as there are usually mentions of both in threads of one or the other.

If you do not know how to use the SEARCH tool, go to the general ITALY BOARDS forum,(not any individual thread) insert the name of one or the other in the empty search box under your username, then hit the little spy glass and all previous threads containing that name will appear ready for you to read and much info will be found by doing that.

This is one example:

This is another when someone was asking about side trips from la Spezia but both SM and Portofino are mentioned in various posts.  Find others using the search tool.

You should also look at tourist information websites for SM and P, also Tripadvisor and any others for info and images which might tempt you to explore both without thinking you need to take a tour.

expect wine tour  in santa margherita are not available being not a producing area ( the nearest producing area are 5 terre)

it much depend how long you will stay in santa margherita ( the locals very often call it simply "Santa")

as far as private tour are concerned you could check with the local tourist office: https://livesanta.it/

you may also try to contact a local tour operator info@velabus.it - www.velabus.it

they are mainly organizing tours elsewhere for locals but might be available for private tours

please also consider that  is a location which can be done alone

my suggestion would be  to take the boat service to san fruttuoso from santa margherita https://traghettiportofino.it/  or to just stop in portofino

you can have lunch either in san fruttuoso or in portofino

you say portofino is reachable by foot from Santa Margharitta.  How far is it?  Our cruise on the Equinox next year stops in Santa Margharitta and we are trying to decide what to do.  Is there enough to do in Santa Margharitta?

We used the ferry in both directions, but Google gives a  disance of approx 5 K. It appears to be a well trodden path as there were many results, so you could do as I did and Google something like " walking distance between SM and Portofino" and you may find some tips.  Do try to take the ferry at least one way as it is a short(15/20 mins)  but super scenic ride.

We found enough to do in both.  Portofino really is tiny but we enjoyed wandering around, but Santa Margherita is a very pleasant seaside resort and  there will be much info on both if you internet search. And do look at past threads here on CC.

We walked up to Villa ? from SM through the park to the top.  There are a few things to see up there and lovely views.  You can exit a different route by using the staircase in front of the church, and that brings you down beside the tiny fishermen's chapel just above the seaside promenade.   Lots of online info, you only need search.  Include Tripadvisor for info and images. Some research will help you decide if there will be enough for you for the day.

I think you will have  enough to see and do between both towns, but that depends on your interests which I do not know. A very pleasant and  more relaxing day than a city would be, always a bonus.  Unless cost is not important to you, probably best to lunch or snack, coffees, ice creams etc  in SM as there is a much bigger selection of options than in Portofino, which is also more expensive.
