Luggage Question

What is the embarkation process in Galveston? Is it possible to hand over all your luggage to Carnival / a porter and then walk around the port and hang out if check-in looks too crowded?

We are traveling with some young kids so we would like the option of "hanging out" if it looks like it is going to be over an hour to get on the Conquest. The hope would be that if we wait until later in the afternoon, the line to get on the ship will not be as bad.
