We were on the Dawn last April and really did not pay close enough attention, but my wife just pulled out one of Norwegians books , and in the back under What to Pack I will quote " If you like you can slip into a pair of khakis and a polo shirt, a skirt and blouse or a sundress for dinner. We do not allow jeans, T-shirts, shorts, cut-offs. tank tops, bare feet, etc. in any of the restaurant's at dinner. " " In warm climates, shorts, slacks, sundresses, jeans and tops- and, of course, a swimsuit and cover-up are all appropriate daytime attire " hope this helps. We will look forward to meeting you on Friday, if not earlier. Let us know if we can be of any other help. Have a safe trip . Bob & Terri
KeystoneCruiser Posted March 13, 2006 #3 Share Posted March 13, 2006 Recent posts seem to indicate that NCL has changed their dress codes for the dining rooms and their publications are not up to date. According to recent cruisers, the words "no jeans" have been replaced by "no ripped jeans." It has also been reported that the word "jeans" has been removed from signs at the doorways to the restaurants that talk about dress code. It appears that nice jeans are now acceptable. Polo shirts and jeans are now fine. No need to bring any dress clothing now.
yiayiamz Posted March 13, 2006 #4 Share Posted March 13, 2006 Just returned on 3/5 (Dawn) and yes the no jeans after 5 o'clock has been removed from the signs at the entrance to the restaurants. I don't know about the specialty restaurants.

I know Jeans are fine on the Dream; this is to accomdate those sailing from Texas, but I am not sure about the rest of the line. For me, I would still choose to forgo the jeans until I am sure they are acceptable. NMNita
KeystoneCruiser Posted March 13, 2006 #7 Share Posted March 13, 2006 Nita: There have been numerous posts from several ships including the Dawn, Star, Majesty and Jewel indicating that the no jeans rule has been dropped. Including a post right here on this thread from yiayiamz. I know you hate the fact that NCL is lowering the dress code, but the proof is in these threads. Where in the World did you get the ieea I hate the fact NCL is lowering their dress code standards? I am aware there have been several threads, however I haven't seen one referring to the Jewel: I must have missed that. The Dream yes, the Dawn I have seen that as well and the Majesty. I am simply saying I don't know if it applies to all ships thus I would rather be safe than sorry. NMnita

BocaDog Posted March 13, 2006 #10 Share Posted March 13, 2006 I got off the Jewel this morning, they made it clear that No Jeans were allowed in any restaurant after 5:00, except the Garden Cafe which was the Buffet .

MANY young and old wore jeans in the main restaurants at dinner. I do NOT recall signs at the speciality restaurants. I assume they know that you will not wear jeans in the "specialities"? Have a wonderful cruise:)
johnql Posted March 13, 2006 #12 Share Posted March 13, 2006 I don't believe there is any distinction, dress policy-wise, between the main dining rooms and the specialty restaurants.
intrepid_guy Posted March 13, 2006 #13 Share Posted March 13, 2006 Jeans were OK on the SPIRIT. Again, you can click on the link in my signature to my pictures and scans of the Freestyle Dailies - each day it said no torn jeans. ~Intrepid
herb Posted March 13, 2006 #14 Share Posted March 13, 2006 From one extreme to the other IMHO.... people don't like getting dressed up for dinner and the cruiseline offers a casual policy, but to go to the extreme of "no torn jeans" is a bit much. shoreguy Posted March 13, 2006 #15 Share Posted March 13, 2006 From one extreme to the other IMHO.... people don't like getting dressed up for dinner and the cruiseline offers a casual policy, but to go to the extreme of "no torn jeans" is a bit much. They put up the good fight but everything is becoming more casual every day. How do you say no to a person that shows up for dinner in a silk shirt and $200 jeans  Last month I did see jeans in the main dinning room on the Dawn. First year I really noticed them. Perhaps because the party next to me the first night I ate in Impressions all had jeans on. I even saw torn jeans. Just beyond that table a woman got up to leave and had on jeans with tattered holes all over them. It used to take me years to get my favorite pair that way 30 years ago. These looked like she spent a fortune to get the look.. Still most people follow the resort casual guidelines published in all of NCL's literature but they don't seem to be turning folks away in jeans anymore. No mention of jeans in the Freestyle D. shoreguy Posted March 13, 2006 #17 Share Posted March 13, 2006 Just called NCL and they said no jeans for dining on the Dawn... I guess i'll now the truth about this in 3 days...:D Michel That is and remains the dress code on NCL - what is happening is they are not enforcing that rule onboard many ships. Most do not where jeans to dinner but the 1% who choose to are not being turned away as in the past. That could change with each F&B manager. New one onboard the Dawn this week. Your choice but don't be surprised if you are asked to change it still could happen.
snorklinbarb Posted March 13, 2006 #18 Share Posted March 13, 2006 Just doublechecked 5 days of Freestyle Dailys for the Jewel between Feb. 5 - 19th. "Jeans, shorts and tank tops are not permitted after 5:00 pm in the restaurants except Garden Cafe." Unlike the Sun and some other ships, there is no DR that is designated "formal" for optional formal night. So there's quite a mix. During the cruise, some jeans may have slipped in. We personally didn't see it in the DR's or specialties, except for the 1st night when they make allowances since luggage is still being delivered. And, of course, embarkation for Super Bowl Sunday was a little bit different, too, with all the sports jerseys.

singitalto Posted March 13, 2006 #20 Share Posted March 13, 2006 I know this has become an issue, but I would like to add my 2 cents. We are sailing on the Spirt in less than a month. DH and I will not be wearing jeans in the DR but I have a 12 yo son and a 14 yo daughter that will be(if they are allowed). I think if the jeans look nice, clean, no rips or tears and are worn with a nice dressy shirt and loafers, there shouldn't be a problem. Hey, On one of my last cruses I saw a sweat suit in the dining room!!! It was worn by a young woman and wasn't dressy either! Bottom line: you can look very nice in jeans, and be inappropriate with something other than jeans!;)

I couldn't agree with you more. Unfortunately I live in NYC and what I've noiced the trend with jeans is, is wearing them 10 sizes too big hanging down below the butt! I'd HATE to see that on a cruise!!!
marilynd Posted March 13, 2006 #22 Share Posted March 13, 2006 Just off the Star . In the Freestyle each day, the dress code stated that no shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, or jeans allowed in any restaurants except the Market Cafe and La Tratoria. I don't know how well it was enforced. I did see a woman wearing jeans in the Tepannaki restaurant.

I don't know how well it was enforced. I did see a woman wearing jeans in the Tepannaki restaurant. The simple answer to this endless debate - they ask you not to where jeans - Check every piece of NCL literature - If you wish to not follow the dress code can you wear jeans and get into dinner yes on most ships. My only word of caution don't take it out on the crew member if in fact you are asked to change. Be prepared pack a couple pairs of dockers for men or capris for women. Dress Code in Dining Rooms Freestyle Cruising gives our guests the freedom to dress as they please. Resort casual attire is always appropriate morning, noon and night. However, NCL/ NCLA does not allow any blue jeans, t-shirts, shorts, cut-offs, tank tops, bare feet, etc. in any of our fine dining restaurants for dinner, including all main restaurants, alternative restaurants, and cover charge venues. Guests are allowed to wear blue jeans, shorts and t-shirts, in the evenings at the buffets, outdoor barbeques, and 24-hour venues, such as the Blue Lagoon, the Cadillac diner, etc. Below are a few exceptions to the dining room dress code: Blue Jeans will be allowed in all dining rooms on all Houston departures, due to the Texas culture. Blue Jeans will be allowed in the Trattoria's in the evenings. Bermuda shorts with knee high socks, or Scottish kilts with knee highs will also be allowed in all dining rooms in Bermuda as these are considered formal dress in Bermuda. Hawaiian shirts are allowed with proper slacks in all dining rooms. Ladies Capri Pants, which are a length between the knee and ankles, are acceptable in all fine dining rooms as long as they are not blue jean capris. Coastalbreezes Posted March 13, 2006 #25 Share Posted March 13, 2006 Hi, I would like to add my own two cents to this topic: We were on the Jewel 2/19 and on more than one occasion, we saw people wearing jeans in the dining rooms -- including Le Bistro and Teppenyaki. Personally, I really don't care except when the cruiseline doesn't enforce their own set rules. This also includes the "no saving deck chairs" and "no one under 18 in the casino" to name a few that are always ignored. I have always maintained that enforcing ship policies is simply a case of good training -- make your rules, train your employees how to graciously enforce them, and then see that they are adhered to. Just my opinion, TracyE
