Durie1989 Posted May 11, 2023 #1 Share Posted May 11, 2023 I have read that it’s best to have balcony rooms on the starboard side for the sail away from Olden. Our cabin is 10606 but I have no idea which side of the ship this is, can anyone help please ?
Leomins Posted May 11, 2023 #2 Share Posted May 11, 2023 That is on the port (left) side of the ship. I’ve no idea if there is a better side for sailing out of Olden although you will always get a more overall view from the open decks.

indiana123 Posted May 12, 2023 #4 Share Posted May 12, 2023 (edited) And just as an aside, something I found useful: Starboard is on the right as said above Port is on the left and is easy to remember as both port and left have four letters. I used to get very confused over which was which!! Edited May 12, 2023 by indiana123

Years ago when I first learnt to sail, it was “there is no Red Port left in the bottle” to also remind about buoy markers.

My Nan had a green vase on her sideboard.
indiana123 Posted May 12, 2023 #8 Share Posted May 12, 2023 Having posted above port/left I realised I can't tell my left from my right sometimes and think I have heard friends say the same🤣. Mind you I often don't know what day it is either!
Pine Man Posted May 12, 2023 #9 Share Posted May 12, 2023 I seem to remember, on an earlier cruise on Britannia, the captain explained to everybody how to work out which side of the ship was port and which was starboard. He went on to say that before deciding which side was which it was important to know where the front of the ship was and gave the following advice - 'The lifts all face the front of the ship when you get out, then added, apart from those that don't!
Fionboard Posted May 12, 2023 #10 Share Posted May 12, 2023 The port side was originally called larboard but changed to port as it sounded too much like starboard I believe.
