Staying overnight before our cruise departs from Galata port.

Have been advised taxis are hard to come by for this relatively short journey.

Anybody had any experience or can advise.

As nobody has replied, can only suggest you contact your hotel as they may have a driver they could organise for you.  Our hotel was able to arrange a car and driver to take us to the airport following our land stay.

You don't say where you are staying.

If  Sultanahmet, its a worthwhile trip for a taxi-driver - as per edinburgher's post, ask your hotel to call a taxi for you (hotels have more sway than one-time visitors)

 

Since our hotel was on the tram route we chose to cheapskate & take the tram.

With luggage that was a dumb move - luggage tends to screw things up on the trams 🙄

But it's doable as a last resort.

On that occasion we were flying in and out of Ataturk International, probably the closest to Sultanahmet.

 

It wasn't an "official" taxi we had, think it was more of a" personal friend of the owner" arrangement, but he had some english, was smartly dressed and his vehicle was quite new and clean.  And he arrived and got us there on time so we were quite happy.  We had got the impression at the hotel that transporting hotel guests was a common occurance so the OP may find a similar service being offered at their hotel.
