Tindari from Messina

Has anyone been to Tindari when having a port call at Messina? I am looking at doing a Celebrity excursion that goes to the Roman ruins and the cathedral to see the Black Madonna. Interested to see if anyone has been there who can let me know what they thought of Tindari and if it is worthwhile visiting.

I went to Tindari last and enjoyed it. I mainly wanted to see the Roman ruins, but the cathedral with the black Madonna was also interesting. Very few people seem to know about the ruins -- they are almost hidden. Most come to see the Madonna. It's considered a pilgrimage site.

While not the most extensive ruins, there are a good number of buildings and even a few mosaics visible.

There are great views from the plaza in front of the cathedral on a clear day.

If you go, don't miss having a stop in the gelato shop across the piazza from the cathedral -- you must try the local specialty: gelato made with ash from Mt. Etna. (You can just ask them for a taste if you don't want a whole scoop.)

Thank you so much. Really appreciate your information. Unfortunately my cruise isn't until June next year but I'll definitely check out the gelato!
