Rio de Janeiro Hotel recommendation

We need a hotel in Rio de Janeiro for one night post cruise on December 30th of this year.  We don’t want to be in a beach area as we live on a beach year round.  We would like to be in an ‘safe’ area where there are restaurants and shopping if possible.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

All the main restaurant and shopping areas are by the beaches.  If you want a safe area away from a beach, look up Barra da Tijuca.  Hilton Barra is an example of a hotel in this location.

You might find it helpful to read some of the previous threads discussing Rio.  You can find them using the search function under your username.
