How to Get Around in Miami???

We are on next week's Spirit cruise. Has anyone ever rented a car for the day in Miami? Are there rental companies near the cruise terminal? Shuttles to South Beach? What have you all done in the past???

Thankls for your help!

Everything I have ever heard is don't rent a car because of the crime. I don't really know if that is true. There is a local rail system that is pretty good I hear. Also do a search for miami tours and you might find what you need. There are many cabs as we disembark. Have fun!

Crime is not an issue. Parking can be.

Cabs are easy and cheap. Busses are cheaper. South Beach ia about a 5 minute cab ride, and about $10, from the pier.

I recommend time at the beach with a stroll of nearby Ocean Dr and Lincoln Rd.

I went to miami last year on the

Dawn (same itinarary as the spirit this year). NCL offers a shuttle around miami (it does a loop). I forget the cost, but it seemed worth it. No need to rent a car, little parking and the shuttle will bring you a few places including bayside and south beach.

Both of what you heard are incorrect.

We took a free shuttle from the port to the AP & rented a car. They gave us great easy to use maps & a phone # to call if we got lost. Driving was pretty easy; there are lots of signs.

It used to be don't rent a car b/c you'll get carjacked. Since then, the rental companies have taken off the identifying marks so you are not easily spotted as a tourist, easy prey.

Rental companies have done that throughout the country. Newark New Jersey was notorious for car jackings of rental cars at one time. Rental car companies have addressed it and it's no longer an issue.
