Pre-Cruise Rome Extension

We are booked on an Iconic Western Mediterranean Cruise from Rome to Barcelona and are trying to decide between booking Viking's pre-cruise Rome extension and doing it on our own. Would love to hear other's experiences with Viking's extension. In particular, I'm interested in learning about your experience with their transfers, the quality of the hotel, and possible excursions. When we are sailing, the Viking hotel is the Grand Hotel Palace.

Following this thread and hoping you receive some helpful feedback on this extension.  We are planning to do this pre-extension too.  It appears that there is only about a day and a half of free time in Rome.  Trying to decide how to make the best use of it!
