Anchorage to Steward

Hi

We thought about renting a van from Anchorage to Steward so we could take a relaxing - stop whenever we want to - take photos - eat whenever type trip but it is very expensive... plus want to be sure we don't have a problem along the way and miss the cruise.

Does anyone have any suggestions for the trip from Anchorage to

Steward? Thanks a lot

Joan

I don't know how many are in your group but a rental car isn't a bad idea either way. First you get to see what you want to see - when you want to see it.

We were going to just take the train from Anchorage to Whittier - but when my DH found out the train would be $55 per person x 4 of us ($220) he suggested we just keep the rental car that we intended to rent for our few days pre-cruise and just turn it in in Whittier. Sure there's a one-way drop off fee but it's still cheaper - since the rental car price didn't change much keeping it the extra day. Still would save us money. Now if it was only 2 of us it might not be worth it. Just really depends on what you plan to do and how long you have.

Since we now intend on keeping the car we have decided to make Seward one of our stops. I can't wait. We love the freedom to do what we want when we want.

As far as breakdowns - I'm sure they are possible. Just be prepared with the emergency number of the rental agency and it wouldn't hurt to have the name of a van service in case you do get stuck by the side of the road. Be sure to allow yourself extra time on the day of cruise. It's really no different then someone driving to their port in the lower 48. You could break down on the side of the road driving as short as 2 hours to the port and have to figure out a way to get there. Just have a back up plan.

There is the train to Seward from Anchorage.

For clarification it is Seward. A one way rental with Hertz is a great idea. Plenty to see and do along the way, as well as in Seward. Head to your library and get a copy of THE MILEPOST, if you are driving elsewhere in Alaska , purchase your own copy. Read up on the Seward Highway, request visitor guides, http://www.anchorage.net http://www.sewardak.org

Expect rates of $200/day. The Alaska RR is also an excellent option with superior scenery.
