Why Is Carnival Shortening Island Time?

Recommended Posts

Y'all are missing the point on the *real* reason.

The ship makes far more money at sea with the casino fully functional, and a "captive audience."

You are right on the money in my estimation. Hard for Carnival to make money when the money is on shore. Celebration now leaves Nassau at 10 instead of midnight.

How much money is spent in the Casino from 10-12???

And...how many drinks are bought from 10-12???

Follow the money trail. I dont think it will lead to lower fuel costs,

and even if it does...it will lead to the most important thing...

higher profit.

The exact reason may vary by port....in Key West, one issue is that the locals do not want cruise ships blocking the view of sunset for land-based resorts in the area, so that's a reason that most cruise ships have to leave by mid-afternoon, which can really cut down on shore time if they are at all late getting the customs paperwork done to allow folks off the ship.

I was just looking at the Destiny Southern Caribbean Cruise and noticed that Carnival has shortened the time at Dominica by 30 minutes, Barbados by 5 hrs. and Aruba by 1 hr. My wife and I have always wished we would have more time to spend in the islands, not less time. We also noticed that on the Triumph Western Caribbean, Carnival shortened the time in Cozumel by 6 hrs. When I first saw this with the Triumph. I thought that in Cozumel it might be because of damage from last years hurricane, but that doesn't explain the Destiny. Has anyone heard why Carnival might be doing this?

the almighty dollar. after all, far too many people have rolled over and accepted / overlooked poor service and problems in other areas why wouldn't Carnival and other cruise lines push things as far as they can. Shoot, they even have their own group of cheerleaders who flame folks who make legitimate complaints. Until people start pushing back, things will continue downhill

We booked our Destiny cruise for this May, LAST spring... then sometime in the fall (I think around November) - we heard and quickly saw that the Barbados stop had been shortened and I do think the Aruba one was shortened by an hour.

It's unfortunate - but it certainly isn't going to ruin our cruise. I would think also that it's most likely fuel costs or maybe even safety issues. Since this occurred well before the propulsion problems - I don't think it could possibly have anything to do with something being "broke".

While I love my Sea-Days....(I'm the first one to tell first time cruisers to make the ship their real destination)....I like plenty of time in the ports.

I don't care what the reason.....saving fuel...or whatever.....It' sucks!

And while the hard-core Carnival Defenders will buy into anything Carnival does......in the end......We Are Paying Them...(the cruise lines) .They Work For Us !

In the end.....if they get to carried away with cutting port time...There are other lines out there for us to use.

From what I hear, it's going to be at least several years before the docks in Coz are rebuilt, thus allowing ships to stay there later in the evening. The devastation to the Carnival dock was complete. The same would hold true for any ship of any cruiseline. If there's no dockage available, it's simply too dangerous to stay and tender people much past sunset.

Check out my pictures from our Miracle cruise. We got some amazing though very sad pics of what the docks look like now. Very sad indeed...

BTW, BlueJacketsFan1, is it the Columbus Blue Jackets you're a fan of??

They are rebuilding the docks now. From what I saw 2 weeks ago, the piers are almost in place for the most part, and they are beginning to run out the walkway from land. They have a concrete batch plant right at the end of the Carnival pier and were working on it when we were there. Shouldn't be too long.

As to tendering, you don't want them to be doing that at night.

The almighty dollar has absolutely nothing to do with shortening the time in Cozumel... nothing. The almighty Wilma, did however.

Just out of curiosity, what is the shortened port time in Coxumel? We thought that we were able to stay in port until 8 PM and have been planning accordingly. If anyone knows the revised schedule I would greatly appreciate it. thank-you.

We just got back from Belize on the Legend. The ship pulled out at 2:15 local time. The local tour guides said that the captain was a "chicken" to leave so early (I guess to get through the small channel before dark) and that most ships stayed at least 2 hours later. I agree with the concensus above that they want the money on the ship. With tendering in to Belize, we just had enough time to go cave-tubing and get back to the port in time for the last tender.

Belize was beautiful. I wish we had more time, especially since out day in Costa Rica was completely rained out.
