SANTIAGO, Chile -- Twelve Americans are reported dead after a bus carrying cruise ship tourists plunged down a mountain ravine in northern Chile.

Authorities said four other people -- two Americans, the Chilean bus driver and a tour guide -- were seriously injured in the crash along a rugged highway near the Pacific port city of Arica.

The crash occurred as the tourists were returning to their Millennium cruise ship after visiting the nearby Lauca National Park.

The ship was scheduled to leave for Peru early Monday, but the departure has been postponed in the wake of the accident.
