MPR21 Posted March 15 #1 Share Posted March 15 First time on QM2 and wondering about something regarding the '24 Independence Day cruise on the QM2. Looking at the sailing map, it shows the return trip going through the Long Island Sound. Has anybody been on this cruise in the past and can confirm that they actually go through the Long Island Sound on the return trip? I don't see how they can as the QM2 just barely clears the Verrazano Narrows bridge at 228', while coming in from the Sound you would have to pass under the Manhattan Bridge (only 135' clearance) and the Brooklyn Bridge (127'). Any thoughts from a previous passenger? Thanks.
Rare NE John Posted March 15 #2 Share Posted March 15 I strongly believe that’s an error on the map not only because of the bridge height issue mentioned above but there are other East River bridges that are not capable of handling her. Also, there is no way QM2 can navigate through the narrow straights and wicked currents of Hell’s Gate, separating the Bronx from Queens. QM2 will have a high chance of running aground at Hell’s Gate even with tugs and pilots boats. Last year, that same cruise sailed past the south shore of Long Island on the Atlantic Ocean side. However, if that’s the case, I’ll be first to get a front row seat on the Long Island Sound here in Connecticut to see that QM2 sight. Maybe @bluemarble has some more Cunard historical color to add; there was a Cunard stop at Stamford, Connecticut, on Long Island Sound at one point but not the QM2.
bluemarble Posted March 15 #3 Share Posted March 15 Yes, that route indicated on the map for QM2's 2024 Independence Day Celebration cruise has to be wrong. The map for QM2's 2025 Independence Day Celebration is more accurate. We do indeed have record of QE2 calling at Stamford, Connecticut. The abstract log records for that voyage indicate it was trip from New York and back where QE2 must have sailed south of Long Island to reach Long Island Sound and approach Stamford from the east. And then back to New York the next day using the same route in reverse around the south of Long Island.
