Is it rude to ask...

How about just watch it before you leave or once you get back ---Make a "romantic dinner" and decorate like a bon-voyage party for just the 2 of you ---But don not bother other people on the cruise.

Why would anyone go to a Cat12 suite to ask if they can use their VCR? Start at the Cat11 suites!!! You'll get a good idea of what the Cat12's would say!

Seriously, talk to Carnival and see if they have a loaner. It's not a good idea to go around the ship knocking on doors to see if you can get into their stateroom for anything. Someone surely would call security and that would be embarrassing.

I'd probably look at you like you were nuts...unless I knew you.

For a 10th anniversary, I think I'd save up the money and when I could afford it, take the cruise then and get a Cat12. It doesn't matter if it's not exactly on the day of your anniversary...it's the idea that counts.

Good luck!

jdockery, My husband has been involved with the B.A.S.S. federation tournament circuits for over 25 years, and we've become friends with many folks from Missouri. I know that most people from your area are very close to their neighbors, and the church groups, and those in your area are very trusting people in general, so I can really understand why you posted your question. You probably thought that on this board, the folks are like one big happy family, and wouldn't think wrong of you for asking. I know that now you have received opinions, you will be prepared to write or call the cruiseline and ask for a loaner while aboard. Sometimes the purser will help you as well. Have a wonderful cruise.

Celebrating 30th cruise soon....

I would have to say sorry too. I also think it would be weird of someone to ask that. After all if we paid the big $ for our room, please don't disturb us. I'm sure your a really nice person, so are we. However asking us this you wouldn't know that we are with the response of no way, so sorry.

Maybe asking anyone for use of a VCR is OK, but leave out knocking on the door. Ask me at the dinner table?

To everyone who responded to this thread, myself included:

Chris gave the answer EVERYONE should have given in the first place. No rude, condescending, irate answers. Jdockery asked a very simple question, not knowing the protocol on a ship. Things are a tad looser on a ship than in other vacation spots. We are, after all, seated with strangers in the dining room.

We should have all taken Chris' example and given her the answer she needed, not complain or be rude. The people on this board are all quite opinionated, but rarely have I encountered such rudeness as I have within this thread.

a few comments.

1) Most of the people responding will not be in a CAT12 and therefore could NEVER offer a valid response.

2) for those that might be in a suite (we were), I really do not know what I would do. We tend to be open, compassionate and friendly, but..

3) When someone was actually knocking at the door vs. asking in a safe area like this message board, your answer might be different.

MEANWHILE - cheap small vcrs cost less that $50 and weight about half a pound. Why not pack one and a plug it into the tv? Bring a normal CABLE and RCA jacks, but many many TVs now have RCA jacks in the front.

The last 2 cruises we've had suites. We had CC folks over twice for parties, and if any of them had asked, we would've been happy to accomodate them. I wouldn't like to be put in the awkward position of being asked by a stranger standing at my door, though. We splurged on our suites the last 2 years and wanted to enjoy them. We'll probably never be able to have an OS again, so someone asking to use any part of our suite impromptu would've been imposing. Just because someone has a cat 11 or 12 doesn't mean it isn't a once-in-a-lifetime romantic experience for them. You wouldn't want to intrude on that, being a romantic yourself. There's no harm in asking this question. It's a very sweet idea watching your wedding video, but please don't subject strangers to it. Can you imagine anything more boring? I don't want to see the wedding video of my SIL, and I had to stay home with a sick child. Please don't ask me to sit through a stranger's video in the cabin I paid for to be alone with my sweetie!

I wonder how many posters who've answered rudely have leaned over a railing and tried to peer onto a balcony. Because the last 2 cruises we had enormous balconies, we also had people straining to look at them. On the Big Z, a woman kept looking around the partition. Thankfully, we had a wrap-around, and she had the "bowling alley" side. We were very tempted to give her something worth watching, but we didn't want to cause her cardiac arrest.

I totally agree with #3......on here, it's easy to assume you'd open the door and allow someone you speak to on the boards right on in...you may even offer them some of your smuggled booze
On a ship full of thousends of strangers, most people wouldn't allow a couple of strangers in their cabin. I wouldn't to it at my home, and I certainly don't change when I get on a ship.

That being said, I know that some of the posts have been tough, but as we all know, some of us here are tough and those of us that aren't just need to get used to the reponses. It took me a while, that's for sure.
This is like 'family' in a sick sort of way... you may not like everyone, but you love them despite their quirks...so cheer up!

I'm only in my cabin, Suite or otherwise, to sleep, get dressed, rest, or use "the head". So, my answer would be no. I don't want to be disturbed even once by anyone on my holiday.

I get this scary picture in my head. I'm taking a nap, there's a knock on the door, it's the assistant cabin steward delivering towels that they forgot to leave earlier in the day. Another knock on the door 20 minutes later, it's the head of housekeeping stopping by to apologize for the towels not being there on time. Twenty minutes later, it's room service knocking on my door with an order my neighbors ordered. Then, another knock on the door five minutes later, it's our new friend jdockery....help me out here Tef, what should I do? LOL

Personally, I originally thought that jdockery was messing with my mind and trying to get a good laugh! It's nice to see that some of you would be so thoughtful, especially since the question was posted on the board and not brought to your front door. I really mean that, very nice. But, there were also a few honest answers that were a little harsh, VERY FUNNY, but harsh.
I honestly don't think anyone meant any harm, except that guy in Detroit! LOL

"That" is the biggest load of horse puckey. Your cabin is your "home" during the cruise IMO. I suppose if you had to potty and weren't home, you'd go knocking on a strangers door? PLEASE.

The origianl comment: I was wondering how you would feel if you were in a category 12 and someone knocked on your door and asked to use your VCR for 15 minutes to watch a wedding video?

Everyone here as said how they would FEEL if this happend to them. So I'm wondering how one can justify saying that most of the people here could NEVER offer a VALID opinion?

Here's mine - If you don't know me, then don't come knocking on my door.

I have had people on occassion walking down the hall and peering into the room when it was being cleaned and actually asked the steward if they could come in and see the room! I was in the room at the time and I was shocked that they would even ask a question like this.

I suggested they go to the purser and ask the purser if there were any empty suites that they could see, but I was sorry I couldn't let them into my room and that I knew they'd understand. They apologized and said something about not knowing that the passenger was in the room! I thought it was really gauche, presumptuous and rude.

Now I have made friends at my table and I never bring up the subject of my accomodations, but if someone asks, I'll tell them. A couple of times a tablemate has asked if they could see my suite and after getting to know them after awhile, I did invite them up for canapes and drinks.

On our last cruise, we took Amtrak to NOLA. Since we had such a long train ride, I thought about bringing a portable DVD player with attached viewing screen. I didn't want to spend the money to buy one because I don't think I would use it that often. SO..I called my local rent-to-own center and asked if they had them to rent. They did and said it would be $30 for the 10 days I needed it. I then called my home owners insurance who said that they would cover it under my policy.

So..I would copy it to DVD and rent a portable player.

It seems kind of funny to me, after all these posts, pro and con, the only one that makes any sense to me is from GayleS. Watch it at home before you leave or after you get back. Why haul extra stuff around if you don't have to. That was my thought from the beginning. No way would I let a stranger into our room to use any of our facilities.

I think we'll have ours put onto a DVD to protect it from any damage. Thanks for the tip. But no way would we bother to take it on vacation, we pack light.

Careful about relying on a DVD (yes, I know I said it was safe earlier.) If not stored properly the information on a DVD will also be lost. However, I believe a DVD lasts longer than a tape. The more you view a tape, the closer to it's extinction, unlike a DVD. The DVD will slowly deteriorate from the surface.

It's not rude to ask, it will just depend on how rude the person on the other side of the door is going to be.
