Malaga

Recommended Posts

Malaga is a fabulous tourist city (especially for a first-time visitor).  You can look online at sites like Tripadvisor to find lists of the most popular tourist options.  For those of us who love to walk (we are talking miles a day) it is possible (and even advisable) to walk from the port into town.  There is a shopping/restaurant area (on the lower level adjacent to the water) relatively close to the port, an adjacent museum, and the walk into the heart of town is along a nice park/Promanade.

We do agree that local Picasso Museum is worth a visit.  We say "local" because sometimes it seems like every Spanish town has a Picasso Museum ( I think there are actually 8 scattered around the country).

Going to Malaga in November. What shall

we so for the day?

Spilied for choice in Malaga as there is much to see and do within the city, but it is also possible to visit out-of-town locations such as Mijas and Ronda or, in the opposite direction, the Caves of Nerja and Frigiliana, one of the prettiest white villages, although Mijas isn't too far behind).  It all depends how adventurous and confident you are using public transport and/or hiring a car for those out-of-town locations although Mijas and Ronda can be quite easily reached with public transport.  I would caution you to be wary of being tempted by a tour to the Alhambra at Granada as this distance is quite  far from Malaga and timed entry tickets can sell out months in advance.  This is one you would be wise to book as a shorex if it is offered.

Within the city itself you can DIY independently on foot and "self guided walking tours of Malaga" are easily found online, but this is a sizeable city and with too much to offer for a single port day, you will need to read about what the city offers, and decide which of these sights and/or attractions are of interest to you personally then plan your day accordingly.

And although I know from your Sardinia thread  that you do not like the idea of websites such as the Malaga Tourist Information website , or Tripadvisor, or YouTube or any similar websites which you might have to Google, these are where you can fill in the gaps which are not covered in past threads such as opening days of the week, opening hours, addresses, entry costs, whether or not to pre-book entry etc. There are times when Google really is your best friend.

There are a multitude of past threads with much info and suggestions within them.  If you have not already searched for and read some, choose from these

Picasso was actually born in Malaga and the museum there is the Picasso BIRTHPLACE museum, so Malaga probably has more Picasso connections than other Spanish cities or towns.

Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga.

He was 10 and he had to move to La Coruña (Galicia), and he was 15 and he had to move to Barcelona where he lived for a lot of years before being married and moving definitely to Paris.

Being in Barcelona he moved from time to a little village inner Horta de Sant Joan and boundary with Aragon called "Horta de Sant Joan". He had the Scarlet fever and the best receipt given to people was to remain in peaceful areas.

I was in Horta some years ago and, being in the middle of nature there was one corner called "Picasso cave". It was known he loved to to go to that little cave to be alone

(what he wanted to do in a cave located two hours on foot from the village, I do not know!!!!)

And, year, every village related with Picasso has its own museum.

Malaga and Barcelona are the best

but.... this is "Horta de Sant Joan" (the village where he rested being ill) painted by Picasso

If you prefer an independent organized tour, I can recommend https://welovemalaga.com.  We did the Ultimate Malaga History and Food Tour for 90 euros per person, and had a really nice experience.  We toured Alcazaba, inside the cathedral, saw where Picasso was born & where Antonio Banderas lives, looked in some shops, and had delicious tapas and wine in several locations.  All were included in the price.

The city centre is quite sprawling in terms of things you might want to see. On a recent cruise, we found the hop on hop off bus very handy for getting round. When there are cruise ships in port, they add a bus stop at the cruise terminal. IIRC, cost is €25.

Upthread, edinburgher mentions Mihas and Ronda. We've visited both when we've holidayed on the Costa del Sol. Definitely worth a visit if the city itself doesnt appeal

True.

To be accurate, "moving definitely from Spain". He went away for political reasons
