Rare Saint Greg Posted August 16 Author #853 Share Posted August 16 I have to get back to the ship shuttle to catch my next excursion. I stopped by the ship. I’m not super hungry because I had fry bread in town a couple hours ago. And I don’t have a lot of time. But I took a walk through the buffet and caught a fresh cheese pizza coming out so I grabbed a couple slices.

Rare Saint Greg Posted August 16 Author #855 Share Posted August 16 On the streetcar tour I recommend being on the right side because most of the places pointed out in town were on that side and I had to go back and walk around after the tour to get my pictures. everyone arrived 15 Mins early so we left 15mins early and got back 15 mins early.
Rare Saint Greg Posted August 16 Author #856 Share Posted August 16 This guy Kirmse came during the gold rush. He brought cantaloupe with him. He sold all his cantaloupe to miners for $20 each. Then he built his store. What he said was don’t mine the mines. Mine the miners. 14
Rare Saint Greg Posted August 16 Author #857 Share Posted August 16 This was built to be a school house. It only lasted one semester because there weren’t any kids. Now it’s a museum and where they have their town hall meetings.
Rare Saint Greg Posted August 16 Author #858 Share Posted August 16 Kwanzaa hut. In WWII the military found that this was a good way to move military equipment around with the railroad. So they came in here. They also redirected the river and now there are no salmon and thus no wildlife here.

Rare Saint Greg Posted August 16 Author #860 Share Posted August 16 They have a nice big..huge multimillion dollar fire/police station on the edge of town that was built with grant money. For a town with no fires or crime. I’m not walking that far. 3
Rare Saint Greg Posted August 16 Author #861 Share Posted August 16 The guy who started this tour was Martin Itgen. He’s considered the father Skagway tourism. This is him with his original car. He wrote a letter to May West basically asking her out. Instead of waiting for a reply he put his streetcar on ferry to Seattle and drove down to the studio. She went out with him. It made the papers and brought more tourism to Skagway. 4

Rare Saint Greg Posted August 16 Author #863 Share Posted August 16 Ok. A lot of references, shows, etc around here are based around Frank Reid and Soapy Smith. Soapy Smith was a bad guy who cheated a bunch of people around here. One night soapy stumbled out of a bar drunk and disobeyed Reid when he told him to leave an area he was guarding. They shot each other. Soapy died immediately. Frank Reid was shot in the…..private area and died of an infection 12 days later. Once people found that Jefferson Smith was Soapy Smith they redrew the line of the cemetery so he would be outside of the cemetery. And put him behind bars. Frank Smith is considered a hero around here. They took a collection at his funeral to build this. Of course they later found he murdered someone in Oregon. Shot a guy in the back. Said it was self defense. Paid off the judge and came up here.
Rare Saint Greg Posted August 16 Author #864 Share Posted August 16 Back there is a rock that the tour guy Martin Itgen painted gold like a nugget. He wanted to show it to President Harding when he visited. The two graves by it are Martin Itgen and his wife.

Rare Saint Greg Posted August 16 Author #866 Share Posted August 16 Our tour driver lives in Florida. Her and her boyfriend drive street cars here in the summer. Her second job is at this brewery. She recommended the spruce tip beer but it doesn’t open till noon so I may not get to try it.

odie1024 Posted August 16 #869 Share Posted August 16 Hope you get to try the Spruce tip beer, we first had it in June 2022 at Skagway Brewing, the brewery hires people to go and harvest the tips in May if I remember correctly. Last year when we were there we tried the chili which was very good. Of course I bought a glass from Skagway Brewing and its sitting in my freezer waiting for the next cold beer. Hate to admit it but I just picked up Shipyard Pumpkin Ale, I know way too early but if I don't get it now it will be gone when I am ready for it.
