Reykjavik Tour to DC3 Crash Site info

Recommended Posts

We are booked on Serenade which overnights in Reykjavik later this month.

We’ve been before, so thought this tour offered something different, combining the South Coast, a ATV ride and a visit to the site of a famous plane crash.

The ship doesn’t offer this tour, just concerned about the possibility of prepaying and not arriving on time or docking at all in Reykjavik. We are due in at 0700 and the tour leaves at 0800 from the port area.

The return is no issue as we overnight.

Appreciate any advice if anyone has experience in Reykjavik with an independent tour. (The operator says just be cancelled 24 hours prior for refund)

The site is "famous" because Justin Bieber filmed a video there.  It has been thoroughly scavanged, so honestly, unless you are a Bieber fan or a military jet fan (so technically, not a DC3), I don't think it's worth the lengthy hike out and back instead of doing a glacier walk or snowmobiling or ice cave visit.  And if it's raining . . .

Have you looked into the Into the Volcano excursion?  Of all the things we've done with 31 nights in Iceland, it is by far the most memorable and unique

I was just watching a You Tube video on “things not worth seeing in Iceland” by a local tour guide.  The crashed plane was mentioned.  The tour guide did not think it was worth it because it is a 2.5km hike each way between the parking lot and the plane.  And just the shell of a plane once you get there.

Perfect.  Go to the link, look at the plane, and they you don't even need to go to the actual location. LOL  It is seriously underwhelming.  It is my understanding it didn't even crash there.  That's just where the authorities dragged the wreckage to get it out of the way.

We went back when tours could drive up to the location, and even then it was not really worth the time.
