Kanazawa questions

Hello! I was wondering if anyone could provide information about touring Kanazawa. We are interested in viewing the Kenrokuen Garden and castle grounds, parts of the old town, and possibly the Museum of Contemporary Art and Samurai District.  Our ship arrives there following a visit to Busan, South Korea. In reading cruise critic posts I understand that there may be a delay in disembarking as we will be the first port stop following the stop in South Korea. Our ship is scheduled to be in port from 0800-1700.

Is self-touring possible/advisable in Kanazawa? Any other suggestions about viewing this destination or preparing for our visit to see this area? Thank you in advance for your advice.

We cruised to Japan and based in Yokohama for 5 days and wore out our Japan rail pass.

One day trip was Kanazawa.  We took the bullet train to/from Kanazawa, visited the Gardens and castles, enjoyed tempura at a department store restaurant (delicious and the folks were most helpful and kind to us).

We bought a city bus pass at the train station and easily got around to those places.

It was a fun and easy DIY day for us in Kanazawa.
