Luggage--Self assist too much trouble 1 adult w/kids

I've booked a short cruise (Fantasy 4 day) for me and my children (5, 7) - first time I'll take them by myself (DH is in Iraq). I have never done the self-assist luggage option, but this trip we should have only 1 suitcase, on the other hand, it with be me with 2 kids. How much of a zoo is it when they call self-assist? Are we able to hang-out and leave later if we have our luggage or are we supposed to leave when called?

Thanks for any help.

Will you be in a hurry to get off? a plane to catch?

If not-- put your luggage out the night beofre and hang around the ship looking at all the cabins you may want to book someday. (keeps the kids interest too) Get off the ship at the last possible moment. This way you wont have to look for your luggage. Less stress when you have two little ones with you.

With two little kids I be afraid we would get seperated. Lots of people are getting off for self asst. Lots more people wait in areas they arent supposed to be. Elevators are clogged.

Living on Earth is expensive,

but it does include a free trip around the sun every year.

I agree with Serene. Unless you have an early plane to catch, I wouldn't do the self-assist ... not by myself with two kiddies in tow.

BTW, when you next write to your DH, send our thanks and hopes that he remain safe over there.

I wouldn't do the self assist with the kids either....probably not even if DH was with you. Not unless you are a big hurry to catch a plane. Otherwise, do as the others suggest and put your luggage out the night before and take your time getting off the ship. You will be so stressed out trying to hold on to both kids because SOME people are in a hurry and tend to lose their manners and won't even think about getting in between you and your little ones. Sad but true. My DH and I have 8 kids between us, ages 18 months to 22 years, so I tend to want to have every detail planned when we travel with the kids.

The self-assist option is only available when called. It is only a very brief window, perhaps 30-45 minutes from the first announcement.

Dance like it hurts, love like you need money, and work when somebody's watching.

We have done the self assist with our young daughter and never again. Wow, I can not believe you will manage to pack for three in one suitcase unless it is very large and heavy, if so that will make self assist all the more hassle.

May vary by ship and cruise line. They will let you know that last day. My experience has been by midnight or by 2 AM.
