srsurman Posted October 9 #1 Share Posted October 9 I did my preliminary research, and I just booked the 12-Day Canada Cruise from Montreal to NYC for September 2026. I'm a bit anxious because although I've been on 3 HAL cruises, all were on the Pinnacle class ships (2 Koningsdam Alaska, 1 Nieuw Statendam Eastern Caribbean). We also always had a balcony. This is our first cruise in an inside cabin, first cruise on a small ship, and first cruise on an old ship, and first cruise without our children. Please reassure me that I didn't make a mistake! Alberta Quilter Posted October 9 #2 Share Posted October 9 You'll be fine. Can't speak about the inside cabin, though; I've had at least an OV. I was on the Volendam in July/Aug and LOVED it! It's easy to get around because it's smaller. There are fewer people. It was my sister's first time on a small ship and the first time without a balcony and she really enjoyed the smaller ship. Just plan on using the cabin for sleeping, dressing and bathing. Of course, there are fewer dining venues; I did miss the Grand Dutch Cafe, and the PG does not have outside windows which is not great, IMO. But it does have a taco bar! All that being said, I'm back to the NS for my next two cruises but I book based on itinerary, not by ship. There's a long thread about the upcoming dry dock where they will, among other things, increase the outlets and add USB ports to all rooms on the Volendam. That will be a huge improvement.
Moriah Posted October 10 #3 Share Posted October 10 Mistake? You will come away from that cruise saying it was your best ever! Wait until you see that wide deck three wrap around deck... she IS smaller and that's a GOOD thing in many ways. Something to look forward to! I always envy people who book cruises TWO YEARS in advance! I can never bring myself to book that far ahead... life just seems so unpredictable. But on the other hand, there's nothing better than a booked cruise - unless it's actually sailing away! Seriously, Volendam doesn't feel old - you will enjoy every minute. And that itinerary is amazing too.
srsurman Posted October 10 Author #4 Share Posted October 10 Thanks for the reassurance! I just realized that I meant to type cabin 2196. Must admit that I was heavily swayed by such a positive review by the Cruising Canuck YouTubers.
rodndonna Posted October 10 #5 Share Posted October 10 (edited) Just off the Volendam on a Can/NE cruise staying in an inside cabin - nothing to worry about! Great ship - easy to get around - and Inside cabins are actually quite large. Edit: Should add that our ship was full booked - and never felt that way at any point. happytotravel Posted October 10 #6 Share Posted October 10 Hi, I did my first HAL cruise on the Volendam this past June and have another booked for June 2025. I was in an inside cabin,1842, which was a sideways cabin and loved it. I also chose a sideways on deck 3 this time for next year. I don't know if they are really larger than other insides but you have the feeling they are. At any rate enjoy your time on the Volendam. For me the ship is a wonderful size with a fantastic crew. Looking forward to next year! happytotravel

We like this ship and was on her 2018. Entertainment was good, but not the same caliber as Rotterdam, because the theater is not as big. Enjoy. You are in a great location for Explorations Cafe on Deck 5 if you like a latte, etc. for a morning beverage.
carnivaljunkie Posted October 11 #10 Share Posted October 11 (edited) We spent 94 days round trip San Diego to Australia in 1877 just below you. No regrets. You are one deck from the promenade deck. So it is a quick trip to go out to see views from both sides of the ship. The cabin is larger than most balcony rooms. Go to halfacts.com and look at cabin 1877 on Zaandam for pictures of this cabin configuration. Great ship, great cabin, great trip. Enjoy! The bathrooms were redone a few years ago; our OV had a lovely shower stall with a glass door where the bathtub was.
