Jewel-Lobster dinner?

Does anyone know if lobster is available on the NCL Jewel? I'm not sure if I read that you can get it on formal night in the main dining room. I can't imagine eating lobster in the shell while dressed in formal wear. Is there a "lazy man's" lobster dish where the meat is taken out of the shell? What if you choose not to go formal that night. Is there any other way to get a lobster for dinner? Via room service?

We sailed on the Jewel in February. We had the surf and turf at their specialty restaurant, Cagneys. It was terrific. If I recall correctly, you got your cut of choice (filet, ribeye, etc). and a half lobster which was easy enough to get pull right out of the shell. The claw was the only part you had to crack open, but that was easy enough. Because its a specialty restaurant, there will be a fee. However, I guarantee you that the loster there will be much better than that served in the main dining room on formal night.

Lobster in the main dining rooms on the Jewel on our February cruise was on Thursday nite. (Sometimes it is Monday)

Ate in Cagney's twice and had the surf n turf both times.

The first time I had a 1/2 lobster, and had to deal with the claw etc.

Saturday nite we went back and they were out of whole lobsters so instead the staff brought me 4 lobster tails and a filet. They had already taken the tail meat out but it was still attached to the shell

Needles to say I was in heaven!

I can't speak about the quality of Lobster in Cagney's, but the lobster in the main dining rooms was nothing to get excited about. It was slighter larger than a prawn and slightly more chewy than an eraser. The taste was way off also, so I did not bother to order another. That's a first for me. I love Lobster, but I could go a long time without another on like the one I had last week. NCL should be ashamed to call it Lobster.

Snorkel, let's face it; these Lobster tails are the same as the frozen ones we can get at our local super market, I have rarely had a great Lobster Tail on any ship. Of course some are better than others. Our last Celebrity cruise, 8 people at the table, all 8 had Lobters, all loved it, mine was mushy and totally tasteless. So, I got a bad one, frozen lobsters are not like Maine Lobster and I don't think anyone expects them to be. The Lobster tail we had on the Jewel last Sept wasn't much either, but I expect that. I guess it is pretty clear by now that you really didn't love your NCL cruise. This is why there are so many cruise lines out there. Hope your next experience is better than your last. NMnita

Thanks to everyone for all responses. I'm not sure what we'll do for lobster but I always get plenty all summer long when I go up to Maine where lobster is KING! Over the course of the summer I think I eat at least 1/week. And then there's the infamous lobster roll. By end of August I'm sick of it all.

NewMexicoNita,

Because I did not enjoy the Crawfish they were passing off as Lobster does not mean we did enjoy ourselves. We had a great cruise. Loved the Freestyle concept. Friendliest crew ever. Great activities and entertainment. Awesome cabin. All I said was the Lobster was enjoyable. Some of the food was quite good, but in my opinion there room for much improvement. I would cruise again with NCL in a heartbeat. I just would not have high expectations for the quality of food.

No hard feelings.

ok, I may owe you an apology as well, but it does seem most of your posts haven't been terribly positive. Maybe I am reading them wrong. I still feel the Lobster thing is just typical for all ships. As for food needing improvement, I will buy that; I love NCL, am a true loyalist but I have had a few meals that I would gladly have done without. This is true on most ships. You are right, no hard feelings. NMNita

If you choose to eat in one of the specialty restaurants that offers Lobster it will be a whole one. NMNita

On the night they had lobster in the main dining rooms (our sailing) it was also available in ALL the other dining rooms. We got some from Tangos and they were the same as those in Azura. Tails only

BTW-both the wife & I thought the Lobster on the Jewel in Dec far surpassed the ones on the Sun exactly a year earlier. Good enough that I had them in Azura early and Tangos later that night ;)

Yes we just came back from an 11 night cruise on Norwegian Dawn March 5th to 16th and found the lobster something to be desired on Formal Night, nothing like what we got in Cagney,s Restaurant, but then you pay for this one. lol Found Norwegian Dawn food going downhill very much, nothing to write home about for sure.

Monte, I guess I wasn't really thinking when I made the comment about the speciality restaurants and whole Lobsters. I was thinking of the alternative dining rooms where you pay. I really haven't had Lobster but have had clients that have reported back. We intend on eating in East meets West on our Sun cruise. After all the years of cruising I have found the tails to be hit or miss. As I said earlier, on Celebrity, our last cruise was the worst, but I have had some pretty bad tails on NCL and a couple of good one on Celebrity. The other lines not so special. On Costa we got 1/2 Lobster drenched in curry powder. It was the worst ever and I like curry. Of course the worst food I have had on any ship was on Costa.

You can be sure I will have a complete review on everything from cabing to food to casino and everything inbetween when we get back at the end of the month. NMNita

Same here, even on the same ship we've found they can vary. We may have been lucky on our sailing, but we thought those on the Jewel were pretty good.

I'm not sure but it seems they were trying the new menus for 3 months. If so yesterday should have ended it. Let's hope so as we will be on the Sun in 2 weeks. I didn't think the food was as good on the Jewel as in years past with the exception of Blue Lagoon and the specialty restaurants. I also have had the same experience with food on other lines. The cost of cruising has not increased so obviously we have to accept the fact something has to go. That is why there are specialty restaurants. I figured out today, it we do all the extra charge restaurants on the Sun, get 1/2 off on at least one night we will spend about $50.00 per person more. For that it is really worth it. NMNita

I just returned from the same cruise as travelnut2. Was my fifth cruise on the Dawn. Menus have changed. But over all I found no change in the quality of the food or service. Food and service were so different I thought I’d do it again on the Spirit in just 22 days. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.:)
