formal night attire

Recommended Posts

I am trying to figure out if I will need to wear a dress on formal dining night or if a pair of slacks and dress shirt will be acceptable. Also do men have to wear jackets for the formal night? I really don't want to spend more money than I have to on clothes. Thanks.

There's a Cruise Fashion forum that would be the best place for this question. And answers will depend on what ship you're on. In general, if the dress code is formal, then you shouldn't eat in the dining room if you're not dressed appropriately. You can eat at alternative options (buffets, etc) dressed more casually, though.

Laura, while you don't need a dress for formal night, a pair of slacks and a blouse just isn't what formal attire is all about. I'm not sure what you mean by a dress shirt, but in my mind a dress shirt makes me think of what a man wears with a suit, and not what a woman wears for a formal dinner. A pair of evening slacks, in a dressier fabric, with a dressy lace or beaded top or jacket is what you can get away with. I just got off Celebrity Summit and I would say that most of the women wore long dresses, short sequined cocktail dresses, or slacks in velvet or chiffon with very fancy blouses or jackets. And yes, a man does need a dark suit for formal night, or at the very least, dress slacks, dress shirt, jacket and tie. If you're on Celebrity, even on informal/semi formal nights, the men have to wear jackets and dress slacks.

hello,

I have been on 15 cruises and the 16th later this year is paid for. The key word for formal night is to look nice and dressed up . You can wear black slacks and a nice top and you will look great. Your husband or whomever can wear a dark suit but on the cruise just completed (3/27 to 4/7/2006) I saw a gentleman in a truly wonderful all white linen suit. I also saw another gentleman in a very nice light beige suit and he looked great.

Just look nice and you will be fine.
