bad weather...

Recommended Posts

...OK, so I'm a OC but our cruise leaves this Sat (april 15th). Been checking the weather and it looks like both our ports have a 60% chance of rain on the days we will be there. I can't help but think that the days at sea are also forcast for rain.

I know, I know. Our port days are NEXT Mon and Tues. so the weather is bound to change over the next week or so. Might be 85 and not a cloud in the sky. Weather.com gives a 10 day forcast so I am able to look that far in advance.

It does have me a little worried though. What if it actually rained the whole cruise? I find myself looking at the activiites on the Enchantment and wonder what we will do for those 2 sea days if it is raining. What about the excursions? Do they do Stingray city in a downpour? We have a day pass a Breezes in Jamaica. Can you cancel last minute and get a refund? Probably not.

Has anyone had just a terrible weather trip? What did you do? I usually make the best of every situation I'm in but would like to actually see the sun a bit if possible:)

It rained for most of our cruise on EOS/Western Caribbean and it was still our favorite of all the cruises we've taken. Keep in mind that a 60% chance of rain doesn't mean torrential downpours, or even cloudy skies, for the entire time. We still had plenty of time out on the pool/sun deck.

Our excusions on Jamaica and Grand Cayman went off without a hitch, and actually they were more enjoyable without the strong hot sun constantly beating down on us. Our day in Cozumel was a wash-out, however we just went shopping in the rain and laughed it off. Then we put the kids in OA and sat out in a protected area, like our balcony or Deck 5 outdoor promenade, relaxing and reading/listening to music. We ate lunch in the dining room instead of the Windjammer for a change. We spent the canceled excursion money on massages at the spa. We also found that we participated in activities that we usually missed on other cruises when we didn't want to come in from the pool or change out of our swimsuits.

It's all what you make of it. My friend in England often says that if they waited for the weather to clear up before they did anything, they would never do anything, so just forge ahead and make the best of it.

If it's Caribbean, rain is different than in most parts of USA.

I live in Cincinnati area , Kentucky actually, and if it says rain here it normally means all day greay nasty miserable.

Then again it changes so fast here you never know.

On Friday it was 70 and sunny until about 4 then tornadoes were touching down then it was sunny again then two hours later electric was out and torrential rain.

NORMALLY, in Caribbean rain means 30 minutes or so of rain then sunny again.

Scattered showers off and on.

As for what there is to do when it rains, it depends on what you like.

There is ALWAYS something going on aboard the ships.

Just check out the Compass. You can view sample Compasses by going to cruiseclues site and checking in photo gallery section.

You'll have fun no matter what the weather as long it isn't a hurricane or anything crazy.

Jthegreat;

Does OC stand for "Outrageously Circumspect"?

Go back and read how frantic you are sounding over something you can do absolutely nothing about.:p

It's a cruise..... Relax and enjoy, no matter what the weather.

Hope This Helps.

Go back and check the TEMPERATURE, and then factor in rain. Actually, rain in the Caribbean cools things off.

Like the previous posters say, if it rains it will probably not be for more than 15 - 30 minutes. Lots of times it's misty or a light rain. Yes, 60% means part of the time it will rain, not "you've got a 60% chance it's pour the whole day".

I've found weather.com to be pretty reliable for their 10 day forecasts. I always check them a few days before we cruise. I was prepared for it to rain off and on our whole cruise to the Med last October. We just took raincoats and umbrellas (it was in the 60's there).

Rainy sea days: go out on Deck 5 and sit and enjoy the sea and the rain. Completely covered. That's where we sat all the way through the Panama Canal, and it RAINED that day. Deck 5 is a great place to sit and read a book on a rainy cruise day.

Have fun!!

We actually cruised in Feb on the Glory and the weather was cold and rainy for 6 out of 7 days. This forced everyone inside and the Circus line did nothing to accomodate (more activities). The cruise was miserable, but we were NOT!!! (although the casino ate my bank account)

Going on the Mariner next week to try to erase the demons.

It was fairly cold, windy, and rainy.

I hit the spa hot tub. If you are worried about cool, windy weather, make sure you bring some kind of warm wrap for getting back and forth to your cabin. The hot tub was great - getting back to my cabin was less comfortable. My usual swim cover-up didn't do the trick.

For our honeymoon in 2003 we sailed the Navigator...It rained for the entire trip--bad storms with lightning, thunder, the ship listing, you name it! We had a blast, hot tubbing in the rain, shopping in port in the rain, lots of fun in the rain! I remember there was sun for 3-4 hours in Labadee....but that was it! It is what you make of it! Hey you are on vacation, relax, enjoy--make a massage appt! Play some bingo....don't let the weather bring you down. I think the last 4 our of 5 of our cruises had at least 1-2 days of rain. I still can't get enough.

Rain is terrible weather?

Rain is nice, it breaks the monotony. Last time I was in Cozumel it poured, and got rather chilly for June and was windy. We got drenched. Was fun. After it stopped raining it got hot again and we dried off. Life goes on and so does the cruise. When it rains, don't look for the grey clouds, look for the rainbows.

I was on Carnival Liberty in January...this was the 1st cruise (in 9) that we had rain. I had never had a day of rain except on embarkation day. We had rain probably 4 out of 6 days. Was so disappointed, but then I thought about how big the ship is and how many things there were to do. Activities were scheduled to make up for days we could not leave ship because of bad weather, and for sea days that rained. I prefer beautiful weather, but hey, I will take a rainy day on a ship to a beautiful day at work. Try not to focus on the what could happens...It is your vacation, you probably waited a while for it (I get 3 weeks a year and let me tell you, I cannot wait for them!) so enjoy the fact that you have the opportunity (sp?) to take such a wonderful, relaxing vacation!!! I work with several people who cannot afford to take any vacation and I guarantee they would take the bowels of the ship with rain everyday just to go on vacation. (OK, maybe not the bowels of the ship....)

Thanks for the encouragement. I know there is nothing I can do about the weather and I hope it's not a washout. Even if it were, I'm sure we will have a great time. A week away from the kids and work can't be bad. It's our 10 year anniversary so we have to spend some time in teh cabin anyway:) .

Major *****: Don't worry about things you have absolutely no control over.

We'd all be batty if we worried about the weather. Last cruise we got rained on in a few ports but, as has already been noticed, Caribbean rain is quite different. In fact, it's wonderful (oh, alright, not that wonderful) but you still have a great time.
