tipping

Not to be anal but this post also could be answered---

No, you don't tip the same $70. Rather it is two separate sums of $70 one each for you and your Daughter. Total tip $140 exactly as Tony's mom stated.

English is so imprecise both yes and no can be correct in answering this question.

I'd like to add another tipping question. We cruise as a family of 5 (and yes, I've always paid the full tips for the kids), but I haven't typically tipped anything in addition to the tips on the S&S card -- except (1) I gave $20 to a dining room drink waiter who kept our kids drowning in extra-large soda refills with maraschino cherries, (2) once I tipped a waiter in the Lido at the end of a cruise, since I felt that he had given extraordinary service during the week and (3) on a Christmas cruise, we gave mini-Christmas stockings with $ to our steward, waiter & asst. waiter. We don't drink much so we don't have a special bartender to tip, and we don't use room service. I've read that many people on these boards generally give extra $ to their stewards and others. Are the recommended tips adequate, or is it expected that they'll be supplemented?

You do not have to Tip extra, its all up to you, If I hit a slot machine for 100.00 or more, I generally use that money to tip these guys during the week, its like giving them Carnivals Money lol.

Never feel like you need to give more. It certainly isn't expected!!! If someone goes well above and beyond, you can tip a little extra. The tips on your S&S will be fine.

I believe if you order room service it is expected to tip $1 or $2 per time, and of course the spa folks rely on tips for thier income. I have heard they get no base pay at all..

The included tips is for housekeeping and the waitstaff, and gets divided between the folks in the main dining room and all those that work the buffets all day.

The MAitre'd... now that guy must really make some money!

Truluv, extra tipping may not be expected but take my word for it an extra fifty to you room steward before the trip (7 day) will go a long, long way - take that to the bank!:D

Like Venture - disagree with this 100% and you can take that money BACK to the bank!

Seen both, can't think of one single thing it would get me over the normal service. When I have asked for something above and beyond, tip when delivered - makes the tip meaningful for the recipient.

What if it hadn't? What if you got exactly the same service as everyone else? Would you have demanded your tip back?

Tipping ahead of time is nonsensical.

Sure, giving the steward $50 up front will make him/her happy-happy, BUT the service will be the same as everybody else's.

Tipping up front is like telling the cabin steward "I know you won't do your job well if I don't give you this money." What an INSULT!:(

I've never tipped up front and never will - and I've always had excellent service throughout all my cruises. The stewards have done everything I asked.

Just leave your auto tips in place, and tip a little extra if you choose.

Got that without the "extra" tip upfront... should have been part of the standard service, but to each his own!:)

We always leave the S&S amount as is.

I have seen people tip up front and get the same service they could have gotten without it. Sometimes bad service. Must have been a bad week for that room steward. We tipped extra durring the week ONLY when we requested something that we knew wasnt part of the standard service,. Normally, we save $40-$60 in cash to give out at the end of the cruise. Havent always given it out, but when we have, it was well diserved. Could be our steward, waiter, or that bartender that just made our week. Last cruise, we tipped the dinning room drink server on the last day.

To each his/her own. Do what you feel comfortable doing.

I know someone that added to the S&S tip because they were to shy to hand cash out.

I've never thought of it this way but this certainly is a valid point.

If the people that rely on tips don't get tipped [bad service or just cheapness] they don't get paid for any difference. They do not have a guarantee. And the fact that they get a tiny salary has got nothing to do with tips. If they provide good service [99.999999% of the time] they deserve a tip. If not, they don't deserve a tip. A high or low salary is not part of the equation.

I withheld a tip from one individual in 46 cruises [service wasn't bad, it was zero] so figure on good service and figure on tipping properly.

$10.00 per day per person...so if your going to a 7 night cruise then it is $70.00 each, however and I have not had this happen to me but you can have it reduced if you feel you didn't get good service and you can have it adjusted ........reading thru some of the replys it really did come to mind about tipping ahead....We had a couple next to us on one of our cruises and they did tip ahead thinking that they should get better service than us....we had no problem with our room steward (we had the same one as she ) but she did complain about him every day...so tipping ahead does you no good at all....
