Cancelling a cruise??

On these boards, there is often mention of people cancelling a cruise and re-booking if they have seen something cheaper etc. In the UK, if we book a cruise with cunard and then cancel we lose deposit (usually 20%).

Am I to suspect that people who book with cunard USA get a better cancellation deal??. Or is it perhaps easier to cancel if booked through a travel agent?

Cunard's deposit is currently 10%. They will allow you to transfer a booking to another cruise for a relatively small admininstrative charge.

 

The detail is all in the brochure.

Hi cunardcruiser, Yes, you're absolutely right. US bookings have different terms and conditions.

 

UK deposits used to be 20% but has now been reduced, as Kindlychap says, to 10%.

Hey. Can anyone assist us with this.

 

We are booked to sail on May the 13th to Alaska, and unfortunately have to cancel for legitimate reasons, but not an emergency or medical reason.

The problem is our travel agent says that we will only get back 30% of the total price for the two fully paid tickets .... given there is still 3 wks till departure.....We lose at least $2500 !!!!!! Doesn't this sound a bit unfair.

We were also given the impression that we couldn't rebook a later cruise or get a credit for the future.

What do you think?????

Any suggestions?

Would trying to contact the cruise line directly help, as we are currently going thru T/agent, wholesaler then cruise line.

Then you can't be sailing with Cunard......I'm affraid you entered into a contract with your cruise line which set out how much you would forfeit if you cancelled....if you have a 'legitimate' reason, one thats covered by your travel insurance, then you may be able to reclaim from them.....

No its not with cunard.

Issue isn't a claimable event so no go with insurance.

I just searched the forums under "cancellations"

to try and find someone with the same problem.....

 

Didn't want to mention the cruise line as yet .....

We paid well over a month ago and wasn't to receive any paperwork regarding cruise info/tickets till this week.

 

Just going on what the Travel agent told us so far, thought the best this to do was bounce the story out there and see what came back...

 

As far as contracts go.... only what is in the smallprint with the T/agent. Basically calcellation may incur 100% forfeit of tickets etc.

 

Still don't think its right..........

sounds like you need a" qualifying" medical condition!!!!

I really feel for you, but this is usual travel industry policy. Suggest you try again on re-booking a later cruise or future credit, and push (politely, of course) for it. My other suggestion is that, at least in the UK, it is not considered acceptable for a travel company to profit from a cancellation, so if the tickets are re-sold to someone else, you may get at least a partial refund (assuming your tickets are sold on at a discount price).

 

If you go with 2Moose's suggestion, make sure it's not a pre-existing condition.

At this point, you need to work with your travel agent. All cruiselines have cancellation policies. The closer to sail date, the more you lose.
