What exactly are the rules? Are there any rules? Are there special smoking rooms or is it allowed in every room? What about the dining rooms? I am not a smoker.

In the bars and deck space smokers are ristricted to the port side. No smoking in the hallways. All cabins are smoking optional. The casino like on land is open season for smokers:D

 

FYI the Star Bar was set aside as an no smoking bar on the Dawn. It may not stay that way since revenue was down over 50%:eek:

Wow, I did not know this and am glad I read this thread. I thought that smoking in staterooms was limited to balconys only so must have been misinformed. I am surprised they allow smoking in staterooms considering they are full of fabrics that could go up in flames in a second. I really wish NCL would reconsider their policy and I guess I will have to pack Febreeze for my NCL cruise!

Under the heading "What you need to know", the seventh item on the list is:

 

"What about smoking, drinking and gambling on the ship?"

Here is the answer:

"Smoking is permitted in designated areas in the bars and outside on open decks. All other areas on board ship are non-smoking."

 

To me that means cabins AND balconies are NON-SMOKING.

How is NCL going to enforce a no smoking policy in the staterooms? Not every stateroom has a balcony. There may come a time when NCL will designate cabins for smoking and non smoking, but that time hasn't arrived yet, and it would be a major headache.

 

Smokers can smoke in designated areas in the lounges, the casino, and on the outside decks. Smokers cannot smoke in the dining rooms, and in the showrooms/theater.

 

The cruise lines do a very good job of cleaning up the smoke in staterooms, as I have never smelled smoke in any cabin. From what I have read at this forum, there is a larger smelly problem when the sewer lines back up.

If that's your assumption, then you're incorrect. Every cabin on every NCL ship is smoking optional. Years ago one side of the ship was smoking and the other non smoking, including cabins. But that changed for some reason. Same thing happens to us on RCI. It's smoking optional.

 

To the OP...if you're looking to avoid smoking areas, look for the signs that designate each area or ask someone.

While on the Dawn we were told that Port side was smoking and Starboard was non-smoking...that's out on deck, pool areas etc....I did find that they did seem to smoke on the Starboard also at times....I am HIGHLY allergic to smoke and did come with a citrus spray for the room but we lucked out the the previous tentants were non smokers.....I am glad that some bars are NON smoking since it is nice to be able to sit and enjoy a drink and not get all stuffed up, runny nose and end up sick all night......but over all I did not have allot of problems on the ship, and the few times I did leave areas I just went somewhere less smokey......

We've never had a cigarette/cigar smoke odor upon arrival to our room. However, from keeping the balcony door open and having neighbors who smoke on theirs, the odor does blow in and then it's hard to get rid of. I was on the Jewel a couple of weeks ago and we had a heavy cigar smoker next door. We had to keep our balcony door shut. Front desk said it was ok for him to smoke on the balcony no matter what side of the ship. Needless to say after having this unfortunate experience on 3 cruises my next cruise in December will be oceanview.

I was on Princess in January and the room smelled of smoke I immediately told the room stewart and he assured me it would be taken care by the end of the day. Well it was not. I could not sleep that night because the smell was so strong. The next morning I called his supervisor. By the afternoon the smell was gone. The supervisor informed me that they changed the curtains, shower curtain, bed spreads, cleaned the carpet and wiped down the walls.

 

If you have any problem with smoke smell in your room, do not hesitate to notify a supervisor who will take care of the problem - timely. That smoke smell is awful when you are a non-smoker.

Thanks, that is good to know..I had no problem but went armed with spray etc....but if it's in the fabric, drapes etc....it's in there to stay until they are cleaned....and yes, if your a non-smoker, old stale smoke is nasty :(

I specifically had my TA check with NCL about smoking. They responded that smoking is permitted in all cabins.
