Great Stirrup Cay in the winter?

Trying to choose an itinerary here... We would like to go in January but is Great Stirrup Cay too cold in January? We really want to be able to go in the water. Thanks in advance!

Think Miami in the winter - you run a chance of it being cooler then we would like:rolleyes:

The air temperature is likely to be warm during January, similar to Miami as Shoreguy mentioned. But the water temps will feel cold at that time of the year. Whether you'll get in the water will depend on the air temps. If it's a warm or hot sunny day you'll warm quickly coming out of the water, but if a cold front just passed through or it's overcast, you'll probably not want to get in the water.

Was there this past early March and the water temp was cooler than other islands farther south but still enjoyable because we had a warm sunny day.

I always go the winter. The water will be colder than you would like, but once in, you should be ok.

Maybe I should bring my wetsuit?

We went in mid December and it was totally fine. No wetsuit needed, the water was "fairly" warm, and we had a beautiful, warm, sunny day so it was perfect. Even if it had been a little cooler, I think the water would have been fine. My friend brought her suit, and used it only in the morning. She commented later that it wasn't really needed.

Don't laugh, I had to use one (a shortie) in Key Largo when snorkeling there last March. Burrrrrrrr, that water gets cold after awhile. And trust me, I've got plenty of natural insulation. :D

 

Didn't need it for GSC but only snorkeled there for about 40 minutes.

Sun yes! But I was thinking of doing some snorkeling and the 1mm wetsuit would be a good protection against too much sun.
