ladymacwilly Posted May 10, 2006 #26 Share Posted May 10, 2006 Point taken. I just hope the really nice Irish couple we met who bought 8 pieces do not happen across this thread. They had lots of fun doing the auctions and they seemed so happy with their purchases. Imagine inviting guests over and all they can say is they bought a bunch of crap. BTW, that reminds me...anyone familiar with the play "ART"? Now, I thought that was really funny. (Of course, I'm sure there will be thaetre critics lurking here too that will also deem that a piece of crap.) ;) Maybe we should do away with theatre next....:D
pnhmrk Posted May 10, 2006 #27 Share Posted May 10, 2006 BTW, can't pasty-white people at least attempt a suntan before they MAKE us look at them entering the pool/jacuzzi in their ill-fitting, outdated, suits? ;) Better still - lets fill in the pools and replace them with "quiet" rooms:p They'd have to be non-smoking, non-drinking (except weak chamomile tea), no reading, no talking, no whatever else you might want to do!

I've got it...Cunard weighs everyone who boards and anyone over the 250 lb limit gets banished to the "quiet rooms". After all, I find it much easier to manuever around skinny little paintings than very large, slow moving, sloths when I'm on my mad dash to the bar to slam down a Scotch and light up a cig! :D

no_wake Posted May 10, 2006 #30 Share Posted May 10, 2006 they need to go away. certianly for all the effort, the lines can come up with a different way to make that same money, if not more.
pnhmrk Posted May 10, 2006 #31 Share Posted May 10, 2006 Anyone over the 250 lb limit gets banished to the "quiet rooms". Anyone over 250lb (I've had to get a calculator out to work out that I'm OK - that's 17 st 12lb or 113.4kg) should be banished from the ship - and charged for the privilege:D What about the geriatric clientèle? That's another lot that should be banished:D (Saying that I'm asking for it!)
ladymacwilly Posted May 10, 2006 #32 Share Posted May 10, 2006 Hmmm...maybe there's a happy medium here... IF the Art Actioneer weighs over 250 lbs AND is over eighty years of age then off he goes! Man overboard! (Just who will we get to lift him over?):D Ah...Shark Buffet!

beach2sea Posted May 10, 2006 #34 Share Posted May 10, 2006 When I'm traveling, I like to buy a piece of art from the area where I am. Not the Dali from the Spelendour of the Seas auction. The endless drone of the auctioneer and the maze of paintings to get through the atrium ! ! ! ! !
Slow Foxtrot Posted May 11, 2006 Author #35 Share Posted May 11, 2006 When I'm traveling, I like to buy a piece of art from the area where I am. "Sound advice, if I may say so. In Pisa last year the Italian local artists were painting most attractive original landscapes for the paltry sum of around £5. I must admit that I purchased quite a few (not for me, you understand, but for the stable girls). I couldn't be too sure but I thought I saw the Cruise Director buying a few dozen so that Elmer from Texas could bid $2000 at the next Art Auction. But there we are, it's a funny old world"
ladymacwilly Posted May 11, 2006 #36 Share Posted May 11, 2006 You are all invited to stroll up Canyon Road in Santa Fe. If you are willing to shell out $50,000 for a painting or $250,000 for a sculpture you can get some great originals! :D Of course they're a little bit hard to take back on the ship. Not a lot of ports in New Mexico.
mtbny7 Posted May 11, 2006 #37 Share Posted May 11, 2006 OHMIGOD! This is the best (funniest) thread in years on CC! Congrats! LOL! I am sitting here at my desk LAUGHING out loud (I am a terribly snobby NYer). My boss thinks I've lost it. Those art autions are horrid! Bleeeech! Just as bad: Those "bazaars" that suddenly appear in atriums/public companionways where the shop girls are selling trinkets and $10 wristwatches and (LOL!) gold-by-the-inch! HAHAHA! OHMIGOD..... and what about those fake backdrops for photos? I am not sailing on Titanic, I'm on the QE 2 or Mary..... why would I want a picture of myself in front of Titanic's staircase? LOL! And (so awful!) all those wires taped (!) to the carpet, and the flashes going POOF!, and the lines, etc.... so cheezy! Esp in those corridors on the Mary... designed to be "evocotive" of the past (large, wide w/ high-ceilings) but are now used as daytime bazaars and night-time giant photo booths! HAHAHA! I am still laughing! Thanks, all! Regards, -Michael, NYC
Jim Avery Posted May 11, 2006 #38 Share Posted May 11, 2006 MTBNY7: I couldnt agree more with you. Whatever happened to the candid photos by those experts at Ocean Pictures? I hate the staged photo ops more than the $27.50 price. Jim.
ladymacwilly Posted May 11, 2006 #39 Share Posted May 11, 2006 Actually, I think I should personally thank all those who cast out their hard earned dough on cheesy photos, inferior artwork, and a very special thankyou to the shmucks who blow a wad in the casino. I feel like they are "supplementing" my cruise fare and for that I don't mind stepping over them, around them, or even on them, for that matter. *Hurdles herself over the riff-raff back to the bar for another Scotch and cig." :D

Don't forget that even more laughs are available when you witness Cunard's 'Art' Auction. An American friend who visits my London club tells me that Warner Brothers are bidding for the comedy rights! I say make them walk the plank until the sharks all swim away in disgust! ;) I do TRY, Lady! It;s just that there's so much of me to GET tan! And others complain that I am blocking their sun! One doesn't need too much imagination to picture your scene. In all frankness the Irish are not renowned for their savoire faire (except in the realm of horse racing and breeding). In fact, I have it on high authority that Cunard give the Irish special discounts in the hope they will all attend the art auctions. Have you heard about this in Santa Fe? The last time I heard of Santa Fe I think John Wayne was driving a stage-coach through it, pursued by Indians. Has it changed much?

"Oh dear, Paul, if only you checked your own 'proper grammar' you would discover that the phrase is 'savoir-faire' and NOT 'savoire-faire' as you state above. As a gentleman I shall overlook this and generously attribute your error to a 'slip of the keyboard'. But, in any case, this thread is connected to Cunard's fantastic 'Art Auctions' and not a forum for criticising the grammatical shortcomings of fellow contributors. It's simply not done in Old England, although it seems to be popular in New England! Criticising our Irish neighbours is, of course, a totally different matter! travel-to-go Posted May 13, 2006 #48 Share Posted May 13, 2006 You guys are cracking me up! English GRAMMAR? I still haven't gotten over how the English refer to Cunard in the PLURAL! I.E. Cunard have, instead of Cunard has. (Hey! It's their line. I guess they are entitled!) To me, they are ONE company. I guess to the British, they are a consortium of people working for the company, or corporate officers, or something. Hey! Who invented that language anyway! Oh yeah, the Greeks, Romans, French, Germans, Indians, and others. Now I remember Karie, who is NEVER language challenged - at least not in quantity! (No one dares challenge me in language! I might wield MORE of it!)
Slow Foxtrot Posted May 14, 2006 Author #49 Share Posted May 14, 2006 English GRAMMAR? I still haven't gotten over how the English refer to Cunard in the PLURAL! Who was it said that England and America are two nations separated by a common language? In my day, if any pupil had written 'still haven't gotten over' this would have merited 'six of the best'. At University it would have been a 'hanging offence'. Acceptable in America - taboo in England! It's a funny old world.
coy860 Posted May 14, 2006 #50 Share Posted May 14, 2006 Unless I awaken in the morning and say to myself "I think I will blow a bundle today onboard, buying art", I do not buy art. This is impulse buying, the very worst. I will purchase at home that which I wish to hang on my walls.
