Art Autions

So how many Art Auctions did you go to that were announced as the ......Final Art Action................only to see that the next day was the Final Very Final Art Auction.

Our Dawn Princess Cruise had a Final Auction and then the next day........had another Final Auction to include the new stuff hauled on board at our last port call.

It seemed to be like those Rug Shops that are always have "Going Out of Business Sales".....:)

I for one avoid the Art Auctions llke the plague. They hold no interest for me.

I also try to avoid all the "sidewalk sales" from the shops, when they block the companionways.

I am not a shopper! (Bah - humbug.)

LOL--so true. One of the main things I dislike about Princess is the constant hawking of jewelry, art, etc. I have no doubt that "due to the popularity of the final auction, we have decided to hold anohter" is true on every cruise.

Well of course ... lots of the crud didn't sell. It's not the age of the piece, it's the milage.

So nobody showed up: That still has some degree of popularity... "Popularity" doesn't have to be POSITIVE.

I admit I went to the auctions and I won too.

It was a wonderful way to spend a few hours. I learned a great deal about the artists of our time.

Would I go again? Perhaps, again to learn. I do not think I have extra wall space for any new art so I more than likley would not bid. :)

You have to love the final sales on the last full day of a cruise especially in the on board shops. Are they not keeping the merchandise for the next cruise to be over priced on the first days of that cruise.

Sometimes, on a sea day, we enjoy the art auction--but maybe its the free champagne. We bought a piece that we really love, and when I got home, and did some research on the net, I found very similar pieces selling for 50% more, unframed, than we spent, framed.

Just purchased two pieces on the April 29 Dawn sailing . I can't wait to get them . They received 100 new pieces in San Diego but I am not sure whether that was planned or not . There were many repeat customers from what I gathered and those that purchased art before were very pleased . My art got paid with my 1000.00 winnings from the Wheel of Fortune slot machine . Only a 30.00 investment . I was the woman who yelled aloud . lol .:)

Unfortunately that seems to be the formula for the art auction. They will try to let you know that you (the passengers) are special enough we are going to bend the rules to fit in one more chance for you to buy.

Personally I think I'm special enough already  but some people seem to react positively to this method. Itsa not personal, itsa business.

To balance this, we have decorated our house extensively with art bought on board. We keep aware of prices, and have found the art to be at prices favorable to us. As they say - buy art you like. And those "leftovers"? We bought some Disney cells one cruise and then found we needed 3 not 2. So next cruise, guess what? We found the one we had passed on was still available. Gotta love that limited edition stuff.

We go to the art auctions to learn about the art and the artists; not to buy anything. It is very educational and we then come home to see what the prices are for the pieces onland (which are more expensive). We have won several art pieces on our cruises and they look great in our house. I would rather go to an art auction than to the casino. At least I don't lose there.

We love the Art Auctions. We have been able to learn so much about the artists. We find it very interesting. Our last cruise, we purchased 10 pieces and we won 11 pieces. We only buy what we like and our house looks wonderful with all of the great artwork. You should go to at least auction. It is a real experience. We can't wait for our next cruise. We won't miss one of the auctions!!

We are definitely not art auction folks as we don't have walls filled with art. However, we did enjoy the art auctions because we found them educational. We looked on it as a learning experience for free and now can speak a few works of "artistic jargon" like Erte, Behrens, and a few I cannot even spell. We have bought a couple of small things that we really enjoyed but art is a personal thing - if you like it and you like the price, then just sit back and enjoy and let them deliver it to you. I agree they do have a number of art auctions and we don't make them all. However, I am sure there are some dedicated artisians who make every auction.

Does anyone know of any artists that are in the art auctions. Is there ever anything by William Phillips, or comparable? I just purchased "Thunderbird Lodge" by him for my husband and I'm curious to know if there are any prints or paintings that are similar in quality?

Thanks, K.M.

Isn't he the artist that specializes in aviation? I have never seen his pieces or anyone elses art that specializes in aviation.

Dear Cruise To Relax: Another fun thing to do, after you've heard the general talks about the artists on one cruise, is to go to the art auction about an hour before the time it begins. This lets you look up close at all the art on display, and better yet, make those comments to your spouse like "I like this one, but the color doesn't match any thing in our house" and "WHAT was he thinking????" It's FUN.

It's funny. We go to the art auctions on almost every cruise (that has them) for the entertainment value (and sometimes because you can buy spa treatments at a discount). Sometimes the auctioneers are very well informed.

Our cruise on Regal Princess- well! The auctioneer made up information about Wyland, an artist we are very familiar with (several lithos and two bronzes in our house). He gave totally incorrect information about how the pewter-in-lucite pieces were manufactured, and therefore lost all credibility with us. We walked away and never went to another auction on that cruise.

On our most recent NCL Majesty cruise, they had a "last day, Final Sale" instead of an auction. All the artwork had price stickers, there was no additional buyer's premium, and I was able to get some more knocked off the price by bargaining a bit. We ended up with a nice, framed Serio-Litho Wyland limited edition, same deal as the auctions- they shipped us a "newly framed" print from the edition, not the specific one displayed on board. It was purchased because we "liked it", not as an investment.

Be aware though, that artwork sold on board is often an entire 'edition' made specifically for the Cruise line or auction house. It can be a signed and numbered lithograph in a different size than the 'identical' signed and numbered Giclee on Canvas of the same 'piece' offered elsewhere.

We contacted the Wyland Gallery to get a price estimate on the serio-lithograph we purchased, and they said that it was an edition made specifically for Princess (This was very funny, since we bought the art on NCL, not princess), not available from Wyland, and therefore would not quote a gallery value or price on it.

We also bought a Mendevev on one cruise, again because I liked it and the price was reasonable.

The auctions can be fun, or terribly dull. Never buy anything as an 'investment' and you will do OK on Princess- where the framing is included. They are very honest that often the cost of the frame if you did it your self is equal to their price of the framed artwork.

William Phillips specializes in World War Planes but he also does winter scenes and nolstalgic type pieces with a plane somewhere in the picture. A little bit like Thomas Kincaids wife's initials always being somewhere in the picture. He is not quite as commercial though.
