steveg Posted May 20, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 20, 2004 We're thinking of taking the train from Livorno to Florence and back on our Millennium cruise in June. I've read that it is not easy getting a cab to take you from the ship to the train statio in town and they "rip" you off if they do. Adding the cost of the cab to the cost of the train, I wonder whether it just pays to take the ship's "Florence On Your Own" tour for $65 pp. On the other hand, if there is another way to get to the train station and back in the afternoon we would avail ourselves of that. Does anyone know whether shuttles are provided from the ship to town and back later in the day? Are they free? What time do they start running? Thanks for any information. We're planning on taking the train into Rome also, but from the posts I've read,it seems that it is easier to get to the train station from the ship without having to use a cab. steveg Posted May 21, 2004 Author #6 Share Posted May 21, 2004 Carmendmun: No we're on the June 26th sailing. We've been to Florence a couple of times before and have seen all the sites and we're just looking to spend the day poking around and hitting the stores. Thanks for the offer, though. roothy123 Posted May 21, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 21, 2004 We just got back from doing this on an Oceania cruise. We walked into town and found a local bus (#1) that went to the "Stazione" (station). It took 7 - 10 minutes, with the station being the last stop. When you walk into town and find the bus stop, you want to be on the right hand side of the street. There are signs at the bus shelters so you can check and make sure you're at the right place for the #1 bus. There's also supposed to be a navetta (shuttle) from the port to the train station - a small orange bus - but we only read about this at the bus station in Livorno - never actually saw it by the port. It costs 2.20 E. When we docked, there WERE cabs, but we asked one cab driver about the fare to the train station and he quoted us 20E. From what we'd heard, this was too much, so we just bagged it. He was, however, kind enough to tell us that there was a bus and pointed us in the right direction for it! The bus stop was 4-5 blocks from where we docked in Livorno. The train to Firenze was easy and cheap.
