Small or Large or Small Table when travelling with spouse only

Recommended Posts

I am sure some folks prefer tables for two...it's a personality thing...some folks are introverts, others are extroverts...

So, my answer is fo ME...others can feel differently...

To ME, a cruise is a very social vacation experience...

If I wanted a more solitary experienc, I could choose to charter a small yacht...or go to a remote, quiet resort where one basically keeps to ones self...

But, a cruise ship is far more communal...

You're typically on there with about 2,000 others...

You go to shows and bars and lounges with a whole lot of people...

You go on shore excursions with others...

You participate in a lot of "group" activities: Trivia Contests, Karaoke, pool games, etc.

And, meals are, likewise, a social event...

Open seating at Breakfast and Lunch, meeting new people each day...

Dinner at large tables...To me, the conversation is a stimulant...it's a way to share the vacation while still on vacation...

It's been that way a long time...

Go tour the Queen Mary or watch any of the movies about the Titanic...

Large tables with John Jacob Astor and wife dining with Molly Brown, etc.

Now, over my cruising lifetime, I've had great tables and I've had questionable tables...

I've been seated with people of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds...

Sometimes it works really well...Sometimes we just make a go of it...Yes, you can even have great dinnertime conversation with people you have little in common with (although, yes, at least a common language would help)...

But it's all just one of those things that makes the cruising experience special...

Usually when I "couples cruise" with DH we are seated at a larger table, and meet interesting folks.

We often cruise with another couple, and in that case we have gotten a table for 4.

We have cruised with our boys and gotten a table for 5, which was fun and good family time.

We have cruised with our boys and had a table for 10 which was fine, too.

On my next cruise (a moms' vacation with a good friend) we'll probably enjoy a table for 6 or more.

And on the following cruise, a VERY short romantic anniversary getaway with hubby, we'll probably do a table for two.

Like they say, "it's all good!"

After several less than enjoyable instances with table mates, I choose a table for 2 when travelling as a couple, the largest table I can get when single or sailing with a friend.

If we meet folks on board we would like to dine with, the Specialty restaurants are always a good option. :) And, we dine there anywhere several times per cruise.

We've been only on one cruise and that was with friends and their teens, so we all sat together. On our next cruise, it's just the two of us and we indicated on our reservation (made online thru RCCL website) that we preferred late seating. Can I also go in and specifically request a large table beforehand, ie, table for 8 or 10? Thanks for any info on how to do this.

After some bad experiences.......

When it's just DH and I we now always get a table for 2

We love to meet new people during the cruise but don't feel comfortable exchanging pleasantries with strangers at dinner...we'd rather meet people in other venues (pool bar, casino etc...) We tell the wait staff that we don't eat salads (on cruises) and don't have desserts and coffee so we're just more comfortable dining alone...we don't want to feel obligated to remain at the table while everyone else is still eating...They love us...we're out of the dining room in 45 minutes..

Travelling with people we know...we'll sit together. But they aren't insulted when we leave early...they know us.

Well I'm not the "want to meet any and everybody" kinda person, so I requested a table for 2 for me and my bf. I don't like doing that mini conversation stuff and it takes me ages b4 I become comfortable with a person, unless we just click, which has happened often, but I never know with who it will happen with. Anyways, thanks to everyone's responses saying they request large tables, I should hope my request defn goes through for a table for 2. :D
