Drive or tour

It seems as if renting a car in Maui is the right thing to do, WE want to get to Haleakala national Park to see the sunrise. My question is "Is this a difficult drive up to the summitt at night??. I like driving, but how are the roads up the mountain. If we don't drive, we were thinking of doing a bike route down the mountain. We are not proficient bikers, so is this an easy thing to do??. Has anyone tried this??> Are they regular bikes or are they special ones. I would think on a regular bike, your 'bottom' might be a bit sore by the time you got down. Can some one help with these questions.
