Princess Air to Tahiti & Upgrades: how does it all work?

I would think you could book an upgrade through Princess as soon as the air opens up for them. Just remember if you do this through them, you will be paying full price for either those few first class seats or the business class seats. It is very expensive to go that route. We were lucky they had 3 seats available and glad we paid for the upgrade at the airport. But, I really don't know if I would have been as happy had we actually paid the full amount that they want for these seats. Nice, but very expensive.

To get back to the real reason for the original post on this thread, if your DH is more than 6 feet tall AND if you plan to fly on AIR TAHITI NUI, then you really, really want to be assured of something other than economy seating.

We live about 55 miles from LAX and tried to get there 4 hours early for an upgrade for our flight on AIT TAHITI NUI last March. However, freeway traffic didn't cooperate and we arrived only 3 1/2 hours early. No upgrades were available by the time we reached the front of the line so we were stuck with economy.

My husband is 6'2", and he was absolutely miserable. I'm 5'6", and I was uncomfortable. The problem with the seats is that they recline in the same manner as a "wallhugger" recliner. The back of seat goes back a bit (and still inconveniences the person behind), but the bottom of the seat, itself, scoots forward, which gives you a couple of inches LESS leg room than you'd have it the bottom of the seat remained stationary, like it does on most American planes.

If we were to go again, we'd definitely fly another airline or find a way to come up with the money to guarantee ourselves business class seats.

For those of you with pre and post cruise stays and traveled on days other than the usual first and last cruise days, did you find the air fully booked?( hope I am explaining this right)

This may be a deciding factor in how we book. I would hate to pay the extra airfare for the upgrade if there were enough empty seats for us to spread out alittle. My Dad and DH are 6'+ but are balking at the upgrade prices. Our air hasn't opened for booking yet but I am trying to figure out which way to go. We are hoping to fly direct from JFK.

We had done the air deviation and paid the $75 per person fee and then found that ATN was having a sale and was able to get our air for $1400 for the two of us from LA. We still had to pay the $75 air deviation to Princess but cancelled our air from them and still saved over $1200 for the two of us. ATN had the exact dates we had made with Princess w/air deviation (as we are doing our own pre and post cruise hotels). This was an ATN sale that we heard about on this Cruise Critic Board. Thanks CC!!

We had booked our flights with Princess for our 9/27/06 cruise and paid the $75 per person air deviation fee as we did our own hotels for pre and post cruise. We then found out that Air Tahiti Nui was having a sale!! We were able to get our flights from LA to Tahiti for $1400 for the two of us. We still have to pay the air deviation to Princess, however we saved $1200 for the two of us!! We found out about this sale through the Boards on Cruise Critic. Thanks CC!!!! It pays to be informed!

Sorry about the garbled junk! A friend was trying to help me post something cute... obviously didn't work. Guess you can't delete the next day. At least, I couldn't find that elusive delete button!!
