Hello

 

We are cruising on the Prisendam with an ending in Istanbul. Should we get our visa before we leave the US or get it onboard the Prisendam?

Unless the cruiselines have agreements with the consolates and have authority to issue visas you will need to apply prior to your trip. We travel a lot within our company and any visa that we need must be applied for prior to our trip and it can take up to a month to get it back.

 

Contact the Turkey consulate in the US and ask them what their requirements are. Also check their website. It will give you the necessary requirements to apply. There are also companies that will help you process your documents - at a fee of course.

We are going to Turkey next week and didn't think a Visa was required.

 

The embassy is only a few blocks from me - I called them and found out if you are staying aboard the cruise ship and are only touring you will NOT need a Visa. If you are staying in a hotel you will and one can be purchased at the border as it states below.

 

I got this off the state dept. web site.

 

TURKEY - *Passport and visa required. Visas can be obtained at Turkish border crossing points for tourist/business visits of up to 3 months or through a Turkish consular office in the U.S. Visa requires a completed application form and a passport with a minimum validity of 3 months. Visa fee is $20 for single entry and $65 for multiple entry (cash or money order only). Visa must be obtained in advance for longer stays and for study, research, or employment purposes. Visa requires your valid passport, 1 completed application form, and SASE. Currently, holders of all types of passports can purchase a 90-day sticker visa at the port of entry for $20 cash if they are traveling to Turkey as tourists. We are boarding Oceania's Nautica on 11-25-06 in Istanbul, and have been assured by Oceania Cruise Line's Visa servicer (and by past passengers) that we can purchse Visas when we arrive at the airport in Istanbul, before we go through Customs/Immigration and Baggage Claim.

We were on the cruise with the OP. As it turned out, the Visa could be obtained onboard for $20. The precruise information said to obtain it in advance or get it onboard for $71 dollars. As usual, we procrastinated and we saved $51 by doing so.
