Kids/cards/lanyards/walkie talkies

We will be traveling on the Triumph and expect to pay for soda cards for the kids. Are the Sign & Sail, room card, and soda card all separate cards? Which of these do kids ages 6, 11, 14, and 16 need to have with them when they're at Camp Carnival/teen clubs? Are there really lanyards in the casino or do we need to buy our own ahead of time (and if so, where?)?

Would the kids ever need a Sign & Sail card?

The younger two probably don't need to bring a room key with them anywhere as they won't ever arrive at the rooms on their own.

I expect when we are getting on and off the ship and doing family things the kids will be with me and I can keep all the cards together. I'm just not sure what all the kids will need to keep track of when we're not together.

We are considering bringing walkie talkies but not sure when/if we'd use them.

Thanks for any tips for our first cruise with kids.

.

On many CCL ships, your S&S doubles as your room card. If yo don't want the kids to have charging ability, go to the Pursers Desk. They will delete that part of their S&S. Along with entering your room, you'll need your S&S to embark/debark the ship. The Soda Card is seperate. There are lanyards [not an unlimited amount] hanging from the casino's slot machines

Sign and Sail and soda were two different cards on the Conquest - Sail and Sign was also the door key. They give away free lanyards on Carnival, but I would recommend the kind you can get at an office supply store that zip shut. I was walking behind at least two adults whose cards flew out of the lanyards without them knowing.....

Walkie talkies work well on the ship and are great for coordinating everyone. I bought ours before the Rhapsody and we used them quite a bit the first few days while we were getting used to things. The last couple of days we didn't feel like carrying them anymore.

The Sail and Sign card is also the Key Card that lets you into the cabin. This past March I saw a girl with a white color card for her Soda Card, so I guess those are separate.

Make sure you put a limit on those cards because they can be used in the Arcade Token machine.

We just got the Walkabout walkie talkies, we will be using them for the first time this Sept. since we will have our SIL with us. This one is the Motorola T-5500R which has some nice features and its also rated at 8 miles.

If the Triumph has a Carnival Vacation Club booth, or the SeaMiles booth you can also pick up a lanyard there with a plastic insert. Just make sure that the lanyards are snug to the person and not flopping all over the place, they can get caught up on a rail or something and can really hurt a kid thats on the run.

These are the Camp Carnival Capers for their age groups:

Under 2 years of age

Ages 2 - 5

Ages 6 - 8

Ages 9 - 11

Ages 12 - 14

These are for the Valor but they pretty much the same program on all ships.

I asked for a lanyard at the cashiers station in the casino and was told they were for "Ocean Players Club" (or something like that) members. It sounded like something for high-stakes players, which I'm not so I never persued it. It may have been a simple thing, I just didn't feel like bothering with it.

My DD brought a lei from home (not the twisted plastic kind, but one with silk flowers), cut it apart and tied it back together with the cards attached. By the way, you'll obviously have to have holes put in the cards--they'll do that at the purser's desk.

The 3m Postit notes on the door are a great idea with the older kids and even spouses you can leave messages like Pictures tonight b/4 dionner meet at a certain time...Yadda Yadda ....

Also you will need several Walkiee Talkiees so you can track them and Vise versa... '

watch out for the channel changeing units the smaller kids will have them all messed up....and not beable to hear you....

Carnival is now selling laynards...In April on the Glory they had a booth set up on the lido deck to purchase them, then the next day I seen the booth set up by the shops...Im not sure what the price was because I had brought my own.

Haven't been brave enough to try a cruise with kiddos yet, but mine are still young and I'm sure we'll take them once they're older.;)

I can say, however, that I wouldn't cruise without walkie-talkies. Even with just adults, it was SO nice not to have to worry about meeting someone at a specific time (if you were doing something else, or just enjoying the sun, you could just radio them and tell them where to find you), for keeping in contact with others in the room, anytime we split up, it was WONDERFUL. I think we had Cobra brand ones (5 miles? I think. They belonged to the couple we cruised with) and they worked without exception. This time I picked up a pair of Motorola ones on Amazon.com for cheap (like $30) and they're 8 mile ones. Hope that helps!

After reading on this great board, when we recently cruised on the Valor, I went straight to the casino to get lanyards. Couldn't find any. We asked someone where we could get them and were directed to the Carnival Vacation Club desk. They gave them out there after trying to get you to sign up for their sales pitch. We declined the pitch, but walked away with 4 lanyards that had plastic sleeves to put in our S&S cards. As a previous poster said, in the wind the S&S cards do come out of the plastic sleeves. We found that if you fold a copy of the deck plans and put that in the sleeve with your S&S, everything stayed put. Well, with the exception of our 9 year old son, who I gave the zip up version of the lanyard to, that I got at Walmart before the cruise. They also sell nice versions on board, but I didn't notice if they zip shut.

I bought the zip shut lanyards at Walmart for 97 cents , they worked great and could put your liscence and afew dollars in with your S&S card. They were by the watches and wallet section. We also took walkie talkies but only used them once then got tired of carrying them around and the older daughter didnt want to carry it so made her stay with the other dd and they had to check in quite often.

I dont know if I would be leaving notes on the door= for one anyone who passes it can read it or take it.

Phones in the cabin are equipped with voice mail- just set it up when you get in the cabin. access it by using any public phone that is located around the ship. (way better and cheaper then walkie talkies)

soda cards and camp-- I dont think the camp for the little one will allow himto get a soda during his stay in camp. (all the other kids have leaving privileges so if they want a soda they can leave camp to go get one.

There is free iced tea, lemonade and fruit punch available on the lido deck almost 24 hours a day

I just bought a package of lanyards with clips on the end (not clear plastic sleeves) and a cheap one-hole hand punch at an office supply chain store.

I expect to punch a hole (not through the magnetic strip) and let the things dangle.

Other posters on earlier threads suggested doing this, including bringing your own small hole punch.
