credit card problems in Alaska?

When we sailed in the Caribbean, we were advised to let our credit card companies know we were going so that they did not refuse a charge from "an unexpected locale". Would this be necessary and/or advised in Alaska since it is part of the United States?

Every year we go to Colorado on a ski trip and every year about 1/2 way through the trip, American Express stops letting us charge until they talk to us. (Maybe it's just my DH trying to control my spending, I just thought of that! ). Anyways, we plan to call before we leave this time.
