Check-In for POAm

A group of 4 of us is sailing on the POAm 7/22. We're in Honolulu for the week prior to the cruise for a conference, and then a little R&R. We plan to have a rental car the last few days we are there. The question I had was- can we check our luggage for the ship prior to our boarding? I was thinking it would be easier/cheaper to drive over to the port and drop of 2 of our group with all of our stuff, check the regular luggage and have them babysit the carry-on stuff until we can drive back to the hotel (Ala Moana) to drop off the rental, and then take The Bus back to the port. Does that seem reasonable, or do we have to stay there once we check our luggage? All of us are new to cruising, so not sure how all this works
