Chaplains on board

Recommended Posts

Not sure where I should post this question so will start here.

Does anyone know whether cruise ships hire chaplains--Protestant/Catholic/Jewish/Muslim? Years ago I had a friend who was hired by Holland American (I think) for a week at a time. The wife paid full fare for the lowest rated cabin, but they were always given the highest rated cabin available at sailing.

Do any cruise ships do anything like this today?

Thanks.

From what I have read on HAL's board, and only concerning Catholic chaplains, they get a cruise free in exchange for being on duty and fulfilling certain assignments during the cruise. I think they get a small crew cabin. In earlier years, they could bring along their mother for free and be in a double, but I think all that has changed now.

It's usually retired clergy that are on cruise ships. On every Crystal cruise there's a rabbi, Protestant minister and Catholic priest. Some cruise lines only have them on board for special holidays or holydays like Yom Kipper or Christmas.
