Ft Lauderdale Hotels

Hi everyone. I'm thinking of taking a cruise from Ft. Lauderdale & looking for a hotel close to the port. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We're looking to sail on the Enchantment of the Seas, so any comments on the ship will also be appreciated.

Bequia, thanks for posting the thread list again and again.. Because of you and I believe Trent had so much info for our last year's cruise. I do have a question however? We stayed at Amerisuites last year and are cruising again this year in October. I have heard a lot of "not so good" reports on Amersuites. Has it changed? It was fine then. Can you help before I book again? Or anyone else who has recently stayed there? Thanks!

Having stayed at several of the Fort Lauderdale hotels before a cruise my wife and I have two favorites.

Lago Mar - Its off the path a bit, but for the price we really like it. Its on the beach and the service has been great.

The River Side - GREAT location, service and rooms can be ok. Ask for a room in the new tower.

I have heard a lot of "not so good" reports on Amersuites. Has it changed?

Amerisuites was recently purchased by Hyatt in December 2004. In September 2005 Hyatt announced that they are being rebranded as Hyatt Place to compete head to head with Marriott Courtyard and Hilton Garden Inn & Suites. Renovation and repositioning of existing AmeriSuites hotels to Hyatt Place is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2005, with rebranding of qualified corporate and franchised hotels due for completion in late 2007.

The Ft Lauderdale Amerisuites is a high volume hotel, with an 86% daily occupancy rate. As a result it experiences a lot of wear and tear. So instead of putting money into the upkeep of the hotel they're just holding out waiting for the renovations to begin. As a result it's starting to look a little rough around the edges.

No date has been announced for when the remodel begins.

How far is the beach from the port of everglades? how much would a cab cost?

Ft Lauderdale Beach is just north of Port Everglades, a 5 minute cab ride, cabs around $10. Hollywood Beach is a little nicer beach just south of Port Everglades, a 10 minute cab ride will set you back around $14. ;)

If you're looking for the nicest budget hotel it's probably Holiday Inn Express on 17th. If you're looking for a step up nicer hotel you can't go wrong with Pier 66 or Renaissance. I much prefer Pier 66 over Renaissance because 99% of the rooms have balconies or patios on ground floor (and in the new tower a view of the ships.) Renaissance is nice too but no balconies or even windows that open.

Judi, they're both fine hotels, it would really depend on what your needs are. The HIX on 17th is very conveniant to shopping and restaurants and is 5 minutes from the port. Sleep Inn, just over a year old, is a wonderful property, minutes from Hollywood Beach, There's a Publix and Walgreens next door as well as a few small shops. The Sleep Inn is about 10 minutes from the port. If there's a big price differance go with the better priced of the two. If the price is the same, HIX.

Just when I was thinking Renisance or Pier 66....I just read this email and the two you mentioned (HIX and Sleep Inn) don't sound too bad. How close is Renaissance and Pier 66 from the beach and restaurants? How far is HIX and Sleep Inn from the beach? I guess either Fll or Hollywood Beach...either one.

They're all a 5 minute cab ride to the beach. :)
