Handicapped lodging in Galveston...

Recommended Posts

Howdy friends...

If anyone is planning a cruise out of Galveston, and is looking for accessible lodging before or after your cruise.... here is our experiences

1) Be VERY careful in booking with any hotel because they state they have accessible rooms, without looking into it further...accessible rooms can mean 100 different things. Following is what we found so far in Galveston....

Harbor View Inn (928 Ferry Road): Forget it, if your in a wheelchair or cannot do steps. All their rooms are on 2nd/3rd floor...with no elevator from parking area (underneath the rooms).

Howard Johnson Express Inn (8216 Harborside Drive): very accomodating to questions regarding accessible rooms and affordable compared to many area hotels.

Super 8 Motel Galveston (2825 1/2 61st street): This franchise location is supposedly is one of Super 8's "top 100" hotels nationwide...but this hotel has a LONG way to go in understanding what accessible rooms means! The person who I spoke to at the hotel stated that their "acessible" rooms were no different than standard rooms. It's a shame that one of the most affordable hotels in Galveston has such poor understanding and sensibility of customers with disabilities.

Quality Inn & Suites (5924 Seawall Blvd): One of our top choices for decently priced affordable housing. Their accesible rooms have roll in showers, a great convenience if your a wheelchair user.

Best Western Beachfront (5914 Sewall Blvd): Very reluctant to book any with them because the hotel stated to me that they can not "guarantee" an accessible for any reservation. Their hotel staff was also unable to answer direct questions about the setup of their "accessible" rooms.

Commodore on the beach (37th & seawall blvd): One of the older hotels in Galveston and affordably priced. They stated a person with a wheelchair would "have no problem" having full access to the hotel and that they have "accessible" rooms. One concern we have about booking with them is because of being an older, affordable beach front hotel...the potential of them attracting alot of "younger, partying crowd".

EconoLodge Galveston (3924 Avenue U): a fairly new and very affordably priced hotel. They state having handicapped accessible rooms, but we were not able to get specific quations answered as to their setup (wider doorways, roll in showers, etc). They also stated that their accessible rooms could only be "requested" and not guaranteed.

America's Best Value Inn & Suites (6311 Central City Blvd): A new, affordable hotel opened in 2004. They claim to have "accessible rooms" but when asked directly, we were told by hotel staff they were NO different than their standard rooms... perhaps they need some ADA education.

Beachcomber Inn (2825 61st Street): One of the older, recently renovated, affordable beachfront hotels in Galveston. They claim to have 2 accessible rooms..which means they have installed a small ramp to the door. All rooms have outside access and a step up into rooms. Hotel staff had no further information about their accessible rooms.

hopes this info helps anyone considering lodging in Galveston...
