mattR Posted July 21, 2006 #1 Share Posted July 21, 2006 A buch of my family may be going on the NCL Star to the Mexican Reviera next spring. It's been a long time since I've sailed NCL so have lots of questions as I can't seem to find answers on there website. 1. Which dinning options charge a cover and how much is it? 2. What beverages are included with dinner? 3. What resturants do you need to make reservations for? (large group) 4. How are the kids clubs for 4 and 9 year olds? (looks like they are closed during meal times???) 5. What activities do you have to pay extra for other then casino, spa, excertions? 6. Do they have full breakfast for room service? 7. Do they have robes in all rooms? 8. Is there any food you have to pay extra for (other then special restaurants) such as ice cream? 9. Can you book excurions on-line? 10. Can you make dinning reservations on-line?
JoeCanadian Posted July 21, 2006 #2 Share Posted July 21, 2006 I'll answer as much as I can... here it goes... 1. Which dinning options charge a cover and how much is it? Le Bistro, Ginza, Cagney's & The Soho Room all have a charge. From what I remeber most were $10-15 per person. Cagney's may have been $20. In my opinion, it's worth it. While we found the food in the resto fo the restaurants to be very good, the food in these restautants is excellent. 2. What beverages are included with dinner? I believe juice, milk, water are included in your fare. 3. What resturants do you need to make reservations for? (large group) For a large group, I would recommend reservations in every restaurant. 4. How are the kids clubs for 4 and 9 year olds? (looks like they are closed during meal times??? Sorry, no kids... yet... 5. What activities do you have to pay extra for other then casino, spa, excertions? The Internet Cafe. There may be others, but none that I can remember right now. 6. Do they have full breakfast for room service? I never tried it, but yes, I believe they do. The food, service, and atmosphere in Versailles is excellent for breakfast. The Market Cafe turns into a bit of a zoo in the mornings, decent food, but you have to fight the crowds. 7. Do they have robes in all rooms? No. 8. Is there any food you have to pay extra for (other then special restaurants) such as ice cream? They offer free ice cream for a couple of hours everyday. Get there early, it lines up pretty good. 9. Can you book excurions on-line? Yes. 10. Can you make dinning reservations on-line? Not that I'm aware of. I'd recommend making your reservations ASAP upon boarding. Make them for the entire duration of the cruise, they can alway be changed or cancelled with reasonable notice. If you're interested, my review of our cruise on the star can be found at http://www.cruisereviews.com/NorwegianCruiseLine/NorwegianStar56.htm So far, the Star is by far our favorite ship. With any luck Kieron will be your CD. Kieron and his staff are outstanding. Have fun!
dgund Posted July 21, 2006 #3 Share Posted July 21, 2006 JoeCanadian did a wonderful job in answering your questions. I will add that you can also get iced tea for free in the buffet or diningroom and that the room service menu for breakfast is pretty limited. Nilla Posted July 21, 2006 #4 Share Posted July 21, 2006 HI I will chime in on the kids club, we were on the Star in January the couple we traveled with had two children with them. It is true the kids club is closed over lunch and dinner. The first night on the ship we just ate at the BBQ, then the second night was formal night and they brought there kids along. MOm and dad complained after saying they did not feel they got to enjoy there dinner with the kids there. SO my suggestion was to them that they take the kids to the buffet nightly for dinner, and then when the kids club opens at 7 we adults can go have a nice sit down dinner! Well they really liked that idea and since the ship was Freestyle, we coudl choose what restraunt we wanted to eat at and go and enjoy ourselves. So this could be a suggestion for your group some evenings!
cruisingfromMN Posted July 21, 2006 #5 Share Posted July 21, 2006 I can answer a number of these and make corrections to the previous poster. A buch of my family may be going on the NCL Star to the Mexican Reviera next spring. It's been a long time since I've sailed NCL so have lots of questions as I can't seem to find answers on there website.1. Which dinning options charge a cover and how much is it? Ginza, Le Bistro and Cagney's. Le Bistro and Cagney's are must do's. Le Bistro, Cagney's and Ginza 2. What beverages are included with dinner? milk, coffee, capuchino, tea 3. What resturants do you need to make reservations for? (large group) I would say all of them for a large group. 4. How are the kids clubs for 4 and 9 year olds? (looks like they are closed during meal times???) Our kids love the Kids Club! We typically brought them to the Kids Buffet. They would have their dinner and then go to the club which I think opens around 7:00 p.m. Our kids could never wait to get there. 5. What activities do you have to pay extra for other then casino, spa, excertions? Bingo, Martini Clinic, Margarita Clinic 6. Do they have full breakfast for room service? No, not for room service, unless you have a penthouse or better. 7. Do they have robes in all rooms? No, Mini-Suites and above. 8. Is there any food you have to pay extra for (other then special restaurants) such as ice cream? All you can eat Sushi. 9. Can you book excurions on-line? Yes 10. Can you make dinning reservations on-line? No, but I wish you could.

You had the kids, they are yours, you take them on vacation with you and now you want to DUMP them off on someone else. In my opinion, this couple you traveled with gets my vote for WORST parents of the year. I'm sorry, but I get sick and tired of people who go on NCL cruises and are upset because they can't get rid of their kids!! ITS CALLED A FAMILY VACATION!!! Be a family, not selfishness! In four cruises with my daughter, we have never not enjoyed a meal in the main or specialty dining room with her. We don't see her as a distraction or a burden or a disruption. We see her as FAMILY. It's been a long time since I've sailed NCL so have lots of questions as I can't seem to find answers on there website.1. Which dinning options charge a cover and how much is it? ginza.. 10-12$ per person. teppanyaki 10$-15$ per person. and the red lion pub and steakhouse charge also, not sure on the price, never ate there. 2. What beverages are included with dinner? anything not carbonated.. if you want bottled water it costs also. you can have tea, juices, 3. What resturants do you need to make reservations for? (large group) i recommend making them in all of them , except the buffet of course. if you are large group so you wont be waiting, you can call on the phone and do it , after boarding, or go in person,,, and remember all the resturants serve lobster on lobster night,@@ 4. How are the kids clubs for 4 and 9 year olds? (looks like they are closed during meal times???) didnt use the kids club this time, 5. What activities do you have to pay extra for other then casino, spa, excertions?bingo costs... other than that, nothing on board, just drinks, food in the paying resturants, and whatever you buy on the ship.. 6. Do they have full breakfast for room service? no.. they have cereal, muffins, danishes. coffee juice and things like that, nothing that has to be cooked.. you can put out a request on your door the night before and state what time you want it to come to your room, and fill out what you want, its a good wake up call. and good for when you are getting off the ship, you dont have to waste time going to the buffet or resturant to eat breakfast.. dont bring fruit off the ship, they wont let you.. FYI 7. Do they have robes in all rooms? no.. we had a balcony room, we didnt have robes 8. Is there any food you have to pay extra for (other then special restaurants) such as ice cream? ice cream is free @@@@ whoo hoo 9. Can you book excurions on-line? yes, 10. Can you make dinning reservations on-line? not that i know of, they didnt allow us to do so in jan,,, when we went, have a great cruise you will love the star.. melissa any other questions let me know, or send me an email . my answers are in the quote sorry i posted it that way

In four cruises with my daughter, we have never not enjoyed a meal in the main or specialty dining room with her. We don't see her as a distraction or a burden or a disruption. We see her as FAMILY. (and family means no one gets left behind!) Oh wow!! I am not sure it is parents just on NCL!! I paid good money to go on a cruise call me selfish that a few nights I wanted to have an adult dinner, where I wanted to enjoy a glass of wine and good conversation, and not being poked by an 11 year old child! I have no children, and yes the couple we travelled with did have kids. Do you ever go out for a meal with out your daughter? Oh no if you do wow you must be a bad parent then! This is just rediculous! I have been on 7 cruises and I have seen many parents that pay for a sitter so that they can enjoy an evening on a cruise with just the two of them, I have never looked at those people and said they are horrible parents! I agree some parents go on cruises and leave there kids in the kids club from sun up to sun down, and on the ship when they are in port! But having a few dinners on the ship without there children I do not see that as a sin! Most kids like a hot dog and hamburger for dinner, and are quite happy going to the buffet and being able to see what they are eating, and not have to look at a menu and try and figure out what they want! As well some kids would rather be able to not have to worry about dressing up to go to the main dining room!
