Canvey, we are on Jewel leaving Aug 30 and considering hubby is a train enthusiast we had to do this excursion in Helsinki. We thought it would be fun to ride the train and see a bit of the countryside in Finland too. Check the RCCL shore excursions for full details.

Steam Train & Helsinki Highlights

This tour features highlights of Helsinki along with a visit to Porvoo. Leaving the harbor, you will pass the shipyard, the Embassy Park, The Market Square, Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral and the Presidential Palace before making a brief stop at the Senate Square. You will also pass the New Opera House, the Finlandia Hall, the National Museum, the Parliament House and the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art designed by American architect, Steven Holl. Leave the city behind as the coach drives eastward to Porvoo. Lunch will be served at a leading hotel/restaurant on the outskirts of Porvoo, the Haikko Manor House.

After lunch, you will enjoy a sightseeing tour of Porvoo, the second oldest town in Finland, dating back to 1346. You will see the majestic medieval Cathedral, and walk the cobblestone streets of this old wooden town. Make a photo stop at the Old Bridge of Porvoo, which offers magnificent views of the town. From there, the tour takes you to Porvoo Station, where your private Steam Train, named “Lili,” will be waiting for you. After boarding the train, you will begin your 40-minute ride to Hinthaara. Passing farms and agricultural areas you will see the rural side of Finland as you steam along. Your coach will be waiting at the Hinthaara Station. Returning to Helsinki, you will visit the Sipoo Old Church, one of the oldest granite churches in the country. It was built early in the 15th century and the vaulted paintings are exceptionally interesting, most of them being symbols of protection. You will pass the Olympic Stadium on your way to the Rock Church; a Helsinki landmark carved of solid rock and topped with a copper dome.

We were in the Baltics last summer, starting in Copenhagen. I see that you will be in port for quite a while and may want to consider doing a train trip from Copenhagen to Helsignor. The train ride is about 45 minutes and there is a great castle to visit there. You may want to do some research on the closest station to where your ship will dock.

Hi,

We are planning a cruise on the Jewel of the Seas around the baltics.

Does anyone know of any good train journeys that one can do.

Our ports are:-

20-Aug Oslo, Norway 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM

s.gif21-Aug Copenhagen, Denmark 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM

Take the S-train from Copenhagen to Hillerod. In Hillerod, visit Frederiksborg castle. It's the most scenic in Denmark. Train journey is ony about 40 min. from Copenhagen. Then, from Hillerod, take a regional train to Helsingor, and visits Kronborg castle, it's about a 30-45 min. train ride. Then, from Helsingor, back to Copenhagen. it's about 35-45 min. journey

Another train trip is from Copenhagen to Roskilde. There you can visist the Viking museum, and the Church where all the Danish kings and queens are buried. It's a very large brick church cathedral, very interesting.

Me personally, I'd visit the castles.

Have fun,

Steve
