Why no self-service laundry facilities?

Recommended Posts

I think Disney is foolish, crazy, and insane to not have a casino. My husband will never go on another Disney ship again. I will never forget him going in search of the casino, to be told they did not have one. Talk about a sad, sad, face! I want him to be happy on vacation too.

Awwwwwww, I feel his pain:( ..Since both my sons will be of gambling age soon they want to go on the ships that have casinos.....can't blame em' if thats whatcha like....

PS - On a side note I notice you're from KM, Ga..you guys have a great band program at your high school:) My kids are heavy in band in high school and I know KM Band is great......That's all...sorry.

Exactly! There's a great place at Disney's yacht/beach club that has laundry facilities right by on of the pools, you can do your laundry and take a relaxing dip in the evenings.

Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort (mid-range resort, set away in it's own large "niche" of 6 villages) has the laundry at the individual villages' pool areas too. LOVED it. It was so convenient, plus you had to have a resort key card to get into it, so not just anyone could wander in. Loved WDW, loved the resort, loved the pools, loved having the convenience.

p.s. I truly don't understand how someone else doing laundry can "ruin" another cruiser's vacation--it's not like we're asking you to do our laundry for us.:D

How is it that the same people who think using a washing machine while on vacation is like the end of the world coming but those same people have no problem standing in the bathroom washing stuff by hand in the sink??????

Because I do four loads of laundry each and ever single day! Oh and *I* don't do laundry by hand. Which would explain my underwires constantly coming out of my bras. :o

Instead of paying to have my clothes dry cleaned at home and then worrying about them getting wrinkled in the suitcase, I often shove dirty clothes into the suitcase and send them to the cleaners on the ship as soon as we board. No worries about how to pack -- should I roll the clothes, crisscross them, layer them with plastic bags? Just stuff them into the bottom of a dufflebag, hand the whole thing to the steward when we board, and the next day they're hanging in my closet in perfect condition!

What a fabulous idea!

Why would you want to wash clothes on vacation? Would you also want to wash the dishes after meals, and then maybe run Henry up and down the corridor?

Seems to me that numerous posters have given you many reasons why they would like the option to do a bit of laundry during an RCI cruise. FYI, I doubt anybody "wants" to do laundry, whether on vacation or at home. It's rather a matter of convenience for whatever reason, not "oh boy, can't wait to do laundry on my cruise."

I've paid for someone to serve my meals and wash my dishes, clean my cabin, bring me clean towels, and keep the ship nice on my cruise. I have not paid for someone to do my laundry. I don't think that the prices are particularly reasonable. We'd like to be able to pack fewer clothes. We have lots of hang to dry clothes, and that's not an option with the ship laundries. I don't want to try to wash and properly rinse my clothes by hand. These are my primary reasons for wishing we had the option.

I think no one doubts that you wouldn't do laundry on vacation for any reason. No problem; no one is asking you to do so or even asking why you don't want to. So, please tell me what's your beef with those who would like the choice? That they don't think the same way you do?

Lightsluvr: I think much of what seems like carping are primarily rebuttals to the inevitable "why would you want to do laundry on a cruise" and "I don't want to do laundry, so no one should have that option" responses.

No one I know seriously thinks that RCI is going to retrofit laundry rooms on the ships. We like most aspects of RCI cruises and do cruise with them. When we do, we have extra luggage. Interestingly, some of the newer NCL ships DO have laundry facilities, perhaps that is in response to pax requests or preferences. Even Cunard and Radisson have self-service laundry facilities onboard--it's not all that uncommon an option.

If you want self-service laundries, book your cruise on Princess or Carnival. RCI and Celebrity are not going to retrofit their ships to add a coin laundry, no matter how much carping is done on this thread.

Thanks so much for enlightening everyone.....

I'd rather overpack and not worry about laundry until I get home, thankyouverymuch...
Most airlines have lowered their checked baggage weight limit to 50 lbs, increased the fees for overlimit bags, and are strictly ENFORCING these limits so, even if your back survives, you may soon find it very expensive to overpack...

I have never had the extra money or priviledge for laundry service at home so I have no idea that it does compare. I can understand it being competitive with land based dry cleaning services but to wash one outfit is 7.00. Now I can wash and dry several days of outfits for 2.00 and all it takes is throw it in the wash, throw it in the dryer, hang it up or put it in the drawer. How hard is that?

With the 50 pound per bag limit for the airlines it makes it really difficult to pack for a cruise without a self serve laundry and I refuse to spend my fun money for their laundry service. Guess RCI should think about making available that extra small space that Carnival, Princess, and HAL ships offer so they could gain new customers.

For long trips, unless you plan to wear things multiple times, you will NOT be able to pack multiple outfits and shoes without either paying hefty overlimit fees to the airlines or doing laundry! In summary, you will pay one way or the other--for onboard laundry or for all the additional baggage.

2 suitcases allowed x 50 lbs each = 100 lbs, minus the weight of the luggage.

If you want landry facilities on future new builds, be sure to fill that out on your comment cards after you cruise, or note it on any snail mail or online surveys you fill out.

I completely agree. At those prices I'm not going to bother having my tightey whiteys and tees washed. I'm going to throw them away and buy new ones. Its cheaper.

Seriously though. Those prices don't seem all that inexpensive to me. For those of us that like to pack light, it can really begin to add up. I've been on a couple of different cruise lines that do offer self serve laundry facilities and I loved having the option. We've even booked a balcony cabin directly across from a laundry room with the idea that it would be convienent. It was and I'd do it again in a second. There was no extra noise, it made doing laundry quick and easy, and I met the most interesting people while doing the wash.

Rinse things in the sink? Sorry folks, I'm a guy that sweats like a pig while I'm in the tropics. Washing my shorts and dirty tees in the same sink I brush my teeth and shave, just ain't going to happen.

Gee, this option has worked for thousands of women over the centuries. There's this miracle product called "soap" that you can use to wash out the sink after you rinse out your things. ;) As for cleanliness and proximity, there's this thing called a "toilet" that is next to the sink where you brush your teeth and shave. :D I'd be more worried about germs coming from that. (again, just kidding, OK?)

Kidding aside, my husband and I use the laundry service all the time. He had his briefs and tees done and they arrived the next day, nice, clean and folded--for less than $20.00. The amount you would spend on a trinket in port. It was worth it--we got to spend more time doing other things.

I refuse to do laundry on a cruise. I can cram 14 pairs of undies in one gallon ziplock bag. I pack a clean bra for every day. Those two items don't take up much room. I pack 2 swimsuits, 2 coverups and 1 bottle of woolite. They get washed out in the sink and hung to dry in the shower. Ipack enough shorts/tshirts to last the whole week. For evening, I love solid color bottoms worn with a patterned top or jacket, so you can get 4 or 5 outfits out of 2 bottoms. A simple black chiffon skirt (wrinkle free) can be worn with 2 different tops for formal nights. I also like crinkle fabrics because the more wrinkled they are, the better they look.

I don't press or dry clean anything before I go, then send it to the ship's laundry once I unpack. No worries about wrinkles the rest of the cruise. My bill is usually less than $50, including my husband's shirts. I can spend that on dry cleaning at home every week. I'm on vacation and don't want to spend a single second doing any type of chore.

We do the same thing. Strategic packing is key. And the Ziploc bag tip is worth it's weight in gold. Also bought some "soft separates"--hand-washable tops, skirts and pants made of lightweight knit fabric--which can also be rolled and tucked into Ziplock bags. On our last cruise, for the first time, it was my husband who packed too many clothes!
