Is it possible to do independent tours while the ship is in Fort Lauderdale? If so can anyone recommend a good operator?

Just ride the water taxi on your own. They provide commentary. Seeing things from the water gives a better perspective then what you can see from land. http://www.watertaxi.com

 

You would still have to take a taxi to the water taxi. Nearest stop is probably the Fort Lauderdale Grande, under the 17th St. Bridge.
