Galveston East Beach -What's the Scene?

I live in Texas, but I've never been to East beach on Galveston Island, and I might just go there on the Saturday before my cruise out of Galveston.. I understand that it has an $8 fee for parking/entry and that you can drink alcohol there, but what is the scene there? Is it rowdy? If it's rowdy, is it in a good way or a bad way? Is it fun? lots of young people? Lots of old people? Family Friendly? Anyone who knows, please drop a post. Thanks!!! :)

In the last +/-10 years I have only been there for the sand castle competition. It's a very deep (distance from water to road) beach with lots of area. I'm sure the "rowdiness" depends on when you are there. Sorry I'm not more help. Hope someone can join in with more info.
