Refurbished - What does that mean?

life is good

Recommended Posts

Good evening fellow cruisers,

Hope all of you are well. I did a search on the word "refurbished" and didn't get any hits.

Just what does a cruiseline have to do to a ship to consider it refurbished? Was looking at the NCL Dawn for next May and the ship first sailed in 2002 and says it was refurbished in 2005. Please don't tell me that the clean-up work they had to do after the rogue wave is considered a refurbishment...

Can anybody shed some light on the term "refurbished" with regards to cruise ships?

Thanks for any info you can provide. I need to book another cruise. I am having "CWS", Cruise Withdrawal Symptoms.

BTW, my friends and I sailed on the Dawn 5 weeks after the rogue wave incident and the ship was in tip top shape.

Definitions of Refurbished on the Web:

The process of restoring a product by cleaning, repairing, recovering, and reusing the item for its original intended use.

http://www.mass.gov/epp/info/define.htm

Equipment which is usually used, and has been inspected and tested by Lake Erie Systems or directly by the manufacturer or their agent. Parts of the equipment which are deemed to be defective or worn, aged or otherwise unsuitable for proper operation may, at our discretion, be repaired or replaced to improve the operation, quality, reliability or visual appearance of said equipment. Equipment which is represented as refurbished is generally suitable for normal operation. ...

So, with this said, I would says that they pretty much start at the top of the ship and take care of everything that is needed until they reach the bottom.

Refurbished means new carpets, new linens, new decorations, new furniture, new machinery and new equipment. For example, in the Spirit's last drydock period last fall, several public spaces were remodeled, or added. The Movie Theatre was removed, and a larger shop and a photo shop were added. The room in front of the casino was changed into the Maharini's Lounge. Several restaurants were renamed with new signage.

Enhancements were made, therefore the ship was refurbished.

I might change that to SOME new carpets, SOME new lines, SOME new decorations, SOME new furniture, etc. Sometimes all get replaced, sometimes only those that are well worn or out of style.

Reburbishing can mean almost anything from new bedding to complete make over. We sailed the Zenith last December; she had just been refurbished; what had been done? The top 3 or 4 decks had new carpet and bedding (not the bed spreads though) there had been a complete clean up which can't be done when the ship is sailing all the time and there was fresh paint a few places. The Century has just been refurbished: in that case it meant even adding several balcony cabins. so you see no one can really define what it means. NMNNita
