Not looking good for Bermuda

Wow, poor Bermuda. Here is the latest from the Weather.com

 

Hurricane Florence now has maximum sustained winds of 90 mph and continues on-track toward Bermuda where hurricane warnings remain posted. Winds on the island have gusted as high as 59 mph, and conditions will continue to deteriorate overnight. Florence is turning northward now, and that will carry the eye of the hurricane very near Bermuda Monday morning.

 

 

In addition to the damaging winds, heavy rain and huge waves expected to hammer Bermuda, the large size of the hurricane is also pushing swells and rip currents toward the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the Bahamas. Swells and rip currents are also beginning to impact portions of the eastern United States coastline, and will continue to do so Monday and Tuesday. Swells on the order of 6 to 10 feet can be expected, although some could reach 8 to 12 feet with breakers as high as 15 feet, especially on east- and southeast-facing beaches on Cape Hatteras, Cape Cod and Nantucket. Potentially deadly rip currents will accompany the swells, so swimmers and surfers should exercise extreme caution. With the hurricane offshore from the U. S. and high pressure building over New England, an increasing pressure gradient will result in winds of 15 to 30 mph over much of the East Coast.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic, a small low about 550 miles ENE of the Leeward Islands could soon become a tropical depression as it moves westward.

Thanks for the article. I am keeping a close eye on this because we are sailing there on October 7th. The storm will be well gone by then, but I just hope that the island does not sustain too much damage or worse, loss of life. Good luck and be careful to the people of Bermuda.

 

There also seems to be a tropical depression forming just behind it from one storm tracker that I saw, but not sure.

I just talked to a friend who lives in Bermuda. They are all buttoned up and do not at this point expect the damage like they had with Fabian. Only time will tell-but the winds are not as bad as Fabian.

The airport was closed last night as well as the causeway leading to downtown Hamilton. Apparently the airport is due to be closed until at least Tuesday night or Wednesday. The following website tracks the hurricane for Bermuda it is http://www.sharkoil.bm

Yep, Tropical Depression # 7 just formed, and is following the track of Florence, and is expected to become Tropical Storm Gordon.
