I was reading through the many Baltic threads and saw a post about a good travel book, but now I can't find the thread. Does anyone remember the thread or even the travel book that was posted?

I think you are probably looking for Rick Steves' "Scandinavia 2004".

I don't know what book was posted on the thread, but I think that Rick Steve's Scandinavia 2004 is the best book out there for those on a Baltic Cruise.

His book is good, but there is zero information on arriving by cruise ship, so you'll have to supplement it with info online.

I bought an excellent one called "Cruise Guide to Europe." It lists each port individually and then talks specifically about how to do things on your own from a cruise ship. It also lists the specialties of each port regarding food, drink, and crafts.

I have the 'Cruise Guide' also, but it only gives a little bit of information on a lot of ports all over Europe. I think the Rick Steves' is better for us for this particular cruise since we are doing all the ports (except St. Petersburg) on our own.

Also check out airfare planet guide books. A good guide is to read IMOORE review of the Grandeur of the Seas on their trip last year. She goes into depth about trams, busses, walking, sites, and books they used. Note the review says Mexican Rivera but it really is the Baltic. All RCI Baltic reviews are labled Mexican Rivera.

 

One thing that seems to be missing from all the threads is how fantastic Tallinn is. Save money and energy for this hidden gem before the world discovers how facinating and beautiful this city is. Old town is a must, and Olde Hansa is a resteraunt that is not to be missed. It is a block up from the main gate to old town. A lot of souvineers are cheaper in Tallinn than St. Petersburg and certainally cheaper than all the other Scandanavian places. Knit items were especially good priced.
